Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is under an ethics investigation that could crash her career.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is under an investigation from the House Ethics Committee, the committee announced Wednesday in a press release.
“The Acting Chairwoman and Acting Ranking Member of the Committee on Ethics have jointly decided to extend the matter regarding Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which was transmitted to the Committee by the Office of Congressional Ethics on June 23, 2022,” the committee said in a statement.
The statement added that the “mere fact of a referral or an extension, and the mandatory disclosure of such an extension and the name of the subject of the matter, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee.”
The committee did not say what it is investigating Ocasio-Cortez for, in accordance with its rules.
Ocasio-Cortez was equally tight-lipped in her response on Wednesday evening.
“The Congresswoman has always taken ethics incredibly seriously, refusing any donations from lobbyists, corporations, or other special interests,” Ocasio-Cortez’s office claimed in a statement. “We are confident that this matter will be dismissed.”
Ocasio-Cortez had two complaints submitted to the Office of Congressional Ethics over her attendance at last year’s Met Gala, according to the New York Post.
One complaint was on the ground that Ocasio-Cortez violated rules because she accepted free tickets to the event, and while members of Congress are allowed to accept tickets to charity events from the organizers the Post said that the complaint filed alleged that Ocasio-Cortez should not have been allowed to accept the ticket because “invitations are controlled by a for-profit company” and “tables at the event are similarly sponsored by corporate entities.”
Generally tickets to the Met Gala cost at least $35,000, The Associated Press reported.
The second complaint allegedly revolved around borrowing jewelry and the custom “tax the rich” gown that Ocasio-Cortez wore to the event, which constituted an impermissible gift.
“If AOC had not been a Member, she would not have been invited to the Gala,” the NLPC complaint read according to the New York Post, “and even if she would have been invited as a private citizen, the designer would not have made a special dress for her to wear at the event.”
Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) is being probed by ethics investigators for potentially violating House of Representatives rules and federal law by requesting tickets to the Met Gala in 2016.
She allegedly called former museum President Emily Rafferty in March 2016 to beg for a ticket after she was left off the guest list.
