Liberals attack every institution the left does not completely control.
This is especially true of the courts.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez melted down over this Supreme Court nomination.
Back in July, Chief Judge Janet DiFiore of the New York Court of Appeals — the state’s highest court — resigned.
Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul selected Judge Hector LaSalle as the replacement claiming she made history by nominating the first Latino chief judge.
“New York’s Court of Appeals has a long history as a beacon of justice, and Judge LaSalle is an outstanding jurist in that tradition. He has the skills, experience, and intellect to ensure that our highest court is seen as a leader across the country,” Governor Hochul declared in a statement announcing the pick. “Judge LaSalle has a sterling reputation as a consensus-builder, and I know he can unite the court in service of justice. He has effectively led the largest state appellate court in the country, and in partnership with Judge Richardson-Mendelson, I know he will be focused on expanding access to justice for New Yorkers. Our state courts are more important now than ever when it comes to protecting our rights and upholding New York values, and I know that Judge LaSalle will lead the court in doing just that.”
There are seven justices on the Court of Appeals and DiFiore’s resignation left three right-leaning justices, two leftists, and one independent so this nomination could cement an ideological majority for the right or the left.
Democrats freaked out over LaSalle’s nomination because while he is liberal, he is not a lunatic leftist.
Ten years ago, LaSalle ruled in favor of a crisis pregnancy center siding with the pro-life organization on First Amendment grounds to shut down a politically motivated investigation launched by pro-abortion zealots.
LaSalle also stood up to Big Labor and allowed business owners to sue union bosses for misconduct.
One of the Democrats most upset about LaSalle’s nomination was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Ocasio-Cortez ranted:
NYC has a rich history of electing powerful, progressive Latine officials who advance workers’ rights, defend our right to bodily autonomy, and work for a better justice system. I strongly urge our State Senate to reject LaSalle’s nomination. We deserve so much better than this.
There are many qualified Latino/a nominees to serve this court. We can make history without contradicting our community’s values or putting our rights at risk. We deserve a nominee that reflects our values: pro-worker’s rights, pro-women & LGBT+ rights, and committed to justice.
Democrats are already furious at the New York Court of Appeals.
Earlier this year the court struck down a Democrat-drawn gerrymandered congressional map which ended up creating fair district lines.
Thanks to this new map Republicans gained four seats in the midterm elections which essentially provided the margin for the GOP to win back the majority in the House of Representatives.
