Bernie Sanders thought 2020 would be his year.
But he was wrong.
A new shock poll shows Sanders’ greatest fear has finally come true.
Bernie Sanders won the ultimate consolation prize in 2016.
After losing to Hillary Clinton because of a rigged nomination process in the previous presidential election cycle, Sanders was set up to dominate the Democratic field in 2020.
His announcement that he was again running for President was met with wild enthusiasm from the far left, who finally thought this was going to be Sanders’ year.
Sanders himself likely thought that 2020 was his for the taking, and that he would win the Democratic nomination by storm before knocking off President Donald Trump in the November 2020 general election.
But now, it seems Sanders may never even get a chance to be the nominee in the first place, let alone defeat Trump.
A new devastating poll shows that the likely Democratic nominee may very well be Joe Biden.
The Hill reports, “Joe Biden holds a 30-point lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in the Democratic presidential field, according to a Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll survey released exclusively to The Hill, further signaling that the former vice president is cementing his place as the primary contest’s front-runner.”
“Forty-four percent of Democratic voters surveyed said they are most likely to vote for Biden in the 2020 Democratic primaries. Sanders comes in second place at 14 percent, while Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) places third with just 9 percent, the poll found.”
This is absolutely horrendous news for Bernie Sanders.
Biden just announced his run for the White House mere weeks ago, and he’s already crushing the rest of the Democratic field in what is rapidly turning out to be a landslide.
“The survey results show a surge for Biden since he launched his presidential campaign last week. A Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll survey from March pegged his support in the primary field at 35 percent, though at the time he hadn’t yet entered the race,” reports The Hill.
Biden’s standing has grown exponentially since launching his campaign, seeing the greatest uptick in support of any candidate after announcing a run for the White House.
This is bad news for Sanders, who Biden is now leaving in the dust.
Unless Biden can be stopped, he seems poised to do what Sanders’supporters thought their guy would achieve all along: a blowout victory in the Democratic primary.
“The Biden surge is significant and greater than expected,” Mark Penn, the co-director of the Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll, said. “His launch was super successful and he has opened up a significant lead.”
This poll gets even worse for Sanders, however. It seems a large number of Democrats don’t think he’s electable against Donald Trump in the general election, while a plurality think Biden is.
“When it comes to who voters think has the best chance of beating President Trump in the 2020 general election, Biden still has a significant lead, with 40 percent of respondents saying as such. Sanders comes in after the former vice president at 13 percent,” adds The Hill.
Do you think Sanders can defeat Biden in the Democratic primary?
