Bill Clinton spoke out about Joe Biden rolling up a red carpet for illegal aliens to pour into the country in an interview with CNN host Fareed Zakaria saying there was a limit to how many people a country could take in.
“There is a limit to how many migrants any society can take without severe disruption and assistance, and our system is based much more on an assumption that things would be more normal,” Clinton stated.
Democrats like Clinton speaking out owes to the party’s frustration with Biden and belief that Biden – who will be 82 in 2024 – is likely to lose re-election two years from now.
Even though Republicans won a majority in the House of Representatives on November 8 Democrats performed better than expected in Senate and gubernatorial races.
That led to Democrats trying to stifle talk of pushing out Biden.
But Bill Clinton understands the power of the immigration issue.
After the Republican revolution election of 1994 where Republicans swept into power in the House and Senate, Bill Clinton saved his presidency by “triangulating” – the maneuver Clinton pulled off by taking credit for all of the Republicans’ ideas.
Clinton used his 1995 State of the Union address to reboot his presidency and fashion himself as an illegal immigration hawk.
“All Americans, not only in the states most heavily affected but in every place in this country, are rightly disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering our country,” Clinton stated.
Clinton attacked illegal immigrants for stealing jobs from American citizens.
“The jobs they hold might otherwise be held by citizens or legal immigrants,” Clinton added. “The public service they use impose burdens on our taxpayers. That’s why our administration has moved aggressively to secure our borders more by hiring a record number of new border guards, by deporting twice as many criminal aliens as ever before, by cracking down on illegal hiring, by barring welfare benefits to illegal aliens.”
Clinton promised to propose a budget that would boost funding to deport illegal aliens.
“In the budget I will present to you, we will try to do more to speed the deportation of illegal aliens who are arrested for crimes, to better identify illegal aliens in the workplace as recommended by the commission headed by former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan,” Clinton continued.
And Clinton paid lip service to the trope that America is a nation of immigrants, but that without secure borders America was not a country.
“We are a nation of immigrants,” he declared. “But we are also a nation of laws. It is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws we have seen in recent years, and we must do more to stop it.”
After the election Joe Biden stated that he intended to change nothing.
And Democrats like Bill Clinton are worried that will prove politically ruinous.
