Chuck Schumer bet big on stopping Brett Kavanaugh.
He suffered a humiliating defeat.
And now his awful decision about the 2018 election just blew up in his face.
Chuck Schumer Retreats on Judges
Schumer led the Democrats total war opposition to Brett Kavanaugh.
Their plan ended in total defeat.
Republicans looked to capitalize on their momentum by confirming 15 new judges before the end of the year.
Democrats spent the last two years dragging out the confirmation process.
Senate rules dictate each nominee gets 30 hours of floor debate.
Democrats made Republicans use every hour on each nominee.
If Democrats pulled this stunt now, Republicans promised to keep the Senate in session through October.
That meant Democrats running for re-election in red states would remain in Washington while their Republican challengers were free to campaign.
So Schumer retreated.
He cut a deal with Republicans to allow for speedy confirmation of 15 justices.
Three of the Justices will be on various circuit courts of appeals.
The Senate will confirm the other 12 to district courts.
Democrat activists erupted in outrage.
They saw their party lose big on Brett Kavanaugh.
Schumer waiving the white flag on these Trump nominees made them sick.
Democrat Base Turns into an Angry Mob
The Democrat base turning into an angry mob became the dominant story in American politics.
Their fury showed no sign of cooling off in the wake of Schumer’s deal.
Key activists bellowed that Schumer betrayed them by not fighting until the bitter end.
Chris Kang the chief counsel for the left-wing group Demand Justice ranted “It is a bitter pill to swallow so soon after the Kavanaugh fight that so many progressive activists poured their hearts and souls into. This period will be long remembered not just for the historic number of judges Trump has been able to confirm, but also because of how passive Democrats were in response.”
“The progressive grass-roots have awoken to the crisis of Trump’s takeover of the courts, and are not going to tolerate this kind of weakness for much longer,” he concluded.
Markos Moulitsas – founder of the influential Daily Kos blog – tweeted:
We need a new Senate leader.
Why Chuck Schumer Surrendered
Schumer surrendered because Senate Democrats took a beating in the Kavanaugh fight.
In addition to losing the fight, Democrats saw their poll numbers sag.
They need to win two Republican-held seats to take back the Senate.
But they have ten Democrats running for re-election in states Donald Trump carried.
Democrats in those states saw their poll numbers sag.
And Republicans running to hold red seats in Nevada and Arizona surged into the lead over their Democrat challengers.
Four Senate Democrats running in red states saw their net favorability rating drop at least seven points over the course of the Kavanaugh fight.
Right now Republicans are not just favored to hold their Senate majority.
They expect to grow it.
