Chuck Schumer created a giant mess that left Joe Biden wondering what hit him.
Democrats feared this day would come.
The left tried to avoid any fight that would upend the 2020 election.
But Chuck Schumer was forced to take one vote he knew would come back to haunt him.
Democrats swear they oppose defunding the police.
Despite Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and other elected Democrats taking up Black Lives Matter’s demand to defund the police, Joe Biden and other party leaders claim they oppose this radical policy shift.
That position became untenable after Chuck Schumer finally showed the Democrats’ hand on defunding the police.
Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton called for unanimous consent in the Senate to pass a resolution condemning the police brutality that led to George Floyd’s death and also condemning calls to defund the police.
“We must reject radical proposals to dismantle and defund police departments as some suggested. … Defunding the police would be deadly. It isn’t a solution but an insult to good officers and a threat to law-abiding citizens,” Cotton stated.
Polls show overwhelming majorities of the American people believe the police murdered George Floyd and that they oppose defunding the police.
This should have been a noncontroversial decision by the Senate to pass Cotton’s resolution.
But Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stepped in and objected, requiring the resolution to clear the 60 vote threshold to end debate.
Schumer’s filibuster essentially killed the resolution to condemn George Floyd’s death because it opposed defunding the police.
“The great worry so many Americans have is that so many on the other side will feel rhetoric and then try to let this go away. We demand action, and we demand it now. Real action, not rhetoric,” Schumer ranted on the Senate floor.
“The resolution by my friend will do nothing. Nothing. It is rhetoric,” Schumer fumed.
Cotton was mystified that Democrats would object to rejecting the call to defund the police when Democrats claim they don’t support this idea.
“I just say again that what we’re seeing here is the Democratic leader apparently objecting on behalf of the Democratic Party in defense of the radical idea that we should defund the police,” Cotton stated.
Joe Biden is trying to claim he opposed defunding police.
“No, I don’t support defunding the police. I support conditioning federal aid to police based on whether or not they meet certain basic standards of decency and honorableness,” Biden said in a recent interview on CBS.
But when push came to shove in the Senate, Chuck Schumer landed on the side of defunding the police.
President Trump warned that if elected, the left would drag Biden to supporting defunding the police.
The fake news media claimed this was a baseless attack.
However, the proof is in the pudding.
Schumer – who would lead the Senate if Democrats take back the majority – caved to pressure from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s wing of the party and opposed a resolution condemning defunding the police.
There is little doubt that Biden – whom many Americans can see no longer possesses his mental faculties – would follow a similar path.
