Joe Biden is running into the biggest problem of his administration.
Biden thought he could count on Chuck Schumer.
Chuck Schumer got some bad news that every Democrat is going to hate.
Democrats are trying to ram trillions of dollars in new socialist welfare state spending through Congress under the guise of a so-called “infrastructure” bill.
But there is a giant obstacle to this plan coming to fruition.
Democrats need all 50 senators to remain united so they can ram the trillions in new spending into law using the budget reconciliation process.
However, Arizona Democrat Senator Kyrsten Sinema is making noise that she may not be on board with this plot.
And to make matters worse for Democrats, Sinema is letting it be known that she wants to be the new John McCain.
POLITICO Playbook reports:
After she won, Sinema called the late senator a “legend” and “my personal hero.” This year, when she voted against a minimum wage hike, she rankled the left by mimicking McCain’s iconic thumbs-down that tanked the GOP’s effort to kill Obamacare.
Now Sinema’s commanding the spotlight not only as a rare swing vote in a hyperpartisan Congress but as a lead negotiator on an infrastructure deal that could determine the success of President JOE BIDEN’S first term. If she pulls it off, she will establish herself, like McCain, as a legislative force inside the Senate.
McCain is obviously a singular figure who spent decades building his stature in the chamber. But Sinema’s current and former colleagues say the two do share some traits: She doesn’t like to be told what to do. She’s also unafraid to buck her party, and at times seems to relish it.
John McCain made a career out of sticking it to conservatives to play to the cheers of the corporate media.
The defining example of this was when McCain showed up on the Senate floor in the middle of the night and famously voted “thumbs down” on the GOP majority’s attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare.
McCain—who previously campaigned on repealing Obamacare and reportedly offered assurances he would support repeal and replace legislation—thrilled the media who saw McCain’s vote as a personal rebuke of Donald Trump.
That was just one of many issues—abortion, amnesty, guns, and free speech were among the others—that McCain voted the Democrat Party line despite nominally claiming to be a Republican.
If Sinema wants to be the new John McCain the shoe could end up on the other foot.
Now it could Democrats that have an Arizona senator in their midst that looks to actively stick their finger in the eye of the base to burnish their “moderate” bona fides.
