A top Democrat will likely need to be hospitalized for at least “a few weeks.”
His problems appear serious.
A top Democrat checked himself into the hospital soon after a medical emergency.
Sen. John Fetterman will likely need to be hospitalized for at least “a few weeks” after checking himself into a hospital this week for severe depression.
NBC News reporter Dasha Burns tweeted, “A senior aide to Senator Fetterman tells me he will likely be in inpatient care for clinical depression for ‘a few weeks.’”
“A senior aide says it’s been difficult to distinguish the stroke from the depression – saying it’s hard to tell at times if Fetterman is ‘not hearing you, or is he sort of crippled by his depression and social anxiety,’” Burns continued. “A senior aide tells me both the staff and Fetterman himself were taken by surprise by the severe onset of depression.”
“The aide also says this hasn’t compromised his ability to do the job going forward, and he will be back to work once he has taken care of his mental health,” Burns added.
Fetterman went to the hospital on Wednesday night after seeking medical advice from the attending physician of the United States Congress.
“Last night, Senator John Fetterman checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to receive treatment for clinical depression,” his office said. “While John has experienced depression off and on throughout his life, it only became severe in recent weeks.”
“On Monday, John was evaluated by Dr. Brian P. Monahan, the Attending Physician of the United States Congress,” the statement said. “Yesterday, Dr. Monahan recommended inpatient care at Walter Reed. John agreed, and he is receiving treatment on a voluntary basis.”
Fetterman also was at George Washington University Hospital for lightheadedness earlier in February where tests allegedly ruled out “a new stroke.”
“He is being monitored with an EEG for signs of seizure – so far there are no signs of seizure, but he is still being monitored,” the statement continued. “We will continue to provide information as it comes in, and we will have more updates as we get them.”
“Initial tests did not show evidence of a new stroke, but doctors are running more tests and John is remaining overnight for observation,” the statement continued. “He is in good spirits and talking with his staff and family. We will provide more information when we have it.”
Fetterman has been blasted for his lack of transparency about his health, despite his serious medical problems.
The Fetterman campaign concealed from the public for two days after his stroke that he had been hospitalized, waited weeks longer to reveal the full severity of the life-threatening stroke he suffered and has never released his medical records.
He owes it to his constituents to be transparent towards voters about the health problems which are impeding his ability to carry out his job as senator.
