The past two years have been embarrassing for the Democrats.
And if they don’t get their act together soon, they will have no chance at beating Trump in 2020.
But everything is about to change now that they know who can beat Trump.
The Democrat field for 2020 is starting to grow.
Nobody seems to be off the table, with virtually every major Democrat floating a potential run.
But there is one who sticks out in a major way.
Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke is a rising star in the party.
The past year has elevated him from being a little-known Congressman to being a household name for those on the left.
That seems to be the end game for his failed bid against Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas.
Despite having an embarrassing loss, he was able to perform above everybody’s expectations.
His campaign brought in tens of millions of dollars, many of which didn’t even come from Texas.
He also was able to create a massive ground game campaign that looks more like a Presidential campaign than a Senate race.
For those reasons, he is now a major contender for the 2020 election.
In fact, he is doing so well now that a MoveOn.org poll shows him outperforming every listed candidate, including former Vice President Joe Biden.
In the poll, O’Rourke brought in 15.6 percent of the vote, while Biden has 14.9 percent.
Trailing both of them is Bernie Sanders, with 13.1 percent of the vote.
Sanders performing lower than both O’Rourke and Biden is significant considering that MoveOn.org supported Sanders above Hillary Clinton in 2016.
O’Rourke still isn’t an announced candidate, but the prospects of his campaign are exciting his progressive base of support.
In the past weeks, O’Rourke has met with former President Barack Obama, in what many believe was to discuss a potential run in 2020.
Along with that meeting, O’Rourke’s Chief of staff David Wysong is said to be in talks with political operatives involved with Obama’s presidential campaign in Iowa and New Hampshire.
Obama’s 2008 performance in the Iowa caucus is historic.
In it, he was able to beat back two much more well-known candidates, Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards.
His win is credited to his ground game, which was based on community organizing, and a pioneering of internet campaigning.
O’Rourke’s campaign in Texas used similar methods, in what some see as a dry-run for campaigning in states like Iowa and New Hampshire.
So he has a major chance at winning the Democrat nomination.
And if he does, he is sure to give Trump a run for his money in 2020.
O’Rourke, much like Obama, is able to attract more progressive voters, while still remaining popular with more mainstream Democrat voters.
And he has the possibility of even attracting some anti-Trump Republicans to support him if he is able to moderate his messaging in the general election.
So there’s no telling what will happen, the only thing that is clear is that we haven’t seen the end of O’Rourke.
Do you think O’Rourke can beat President Trump in 2020?
