It’s official, the shutdown has carried over to 2019.
With Democrats retaking the House of Representatives this week, their number one priority in January will be to stop President Trump from building a wall at any costs.
But Democrats are about to make a massive mistake on the shutdown that could cost them dearly.
As the new year was rung in, the Federal government shutdown continues with no end in sight.
Fueled by a dispute over funding for a wall with Mexico and border security, neither President Trump nor Congressional Democrats appear ready to agree to the others’ demands.
But Democrats are now the majority party in the House of Representatives.
This strengthens their bargaining position much more than before.
Any bill to end the shutdown and reopen the Federal government will have to pass through the chamber Nancy Pelosi will now be the Speaker of.
With this in mind, Democrats are announcing their first order of business will be to bring forth legislation in the House to end the shutdown and reopen the government without any of President Trump’s agenda items in the bill.
Breitbart reported, “On Friday’s broadcast of CNN’s “Situation Room,” incoming House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) stated that he will put a bill on the floor to end the government shutdown on January 3.”
Hoyer, a powerful House Democrat and longtime ally of Pelosi, said, “I’m going to be the majority leader of the House, as of January 3. And I intend to put a bill on the floor, on January 3 that, if the Senate approves it and the president signs it, will open government.”
The thing is, Hoyer knows any Democratic-backed bill to reopen the government without any concessions to the President on border security may not even pass the Senate, let alone the White House.
President Trump will veto any bill that doesn’t include a wall, as the White House has signaled many times.
And this is where Hoyer and the Democrats are on the verge of making a huge mistake.
They know the bill won’t pass but they intend to push it through anyway.
They believe pushing for a bill that gives the President none of what he asked for is going to be a win-win for them.
But the truth is, it could redefine the entire debate over the wall in a way that hurts Democrats.
Because Hoyer’s bill is unlikely to pass the Senate, President Trump won’t even be given the opportunity to act on it.
If that happens, the narrative of the shutdown debate could change for the worst for Democrats.
Rather than a border battle between President Trump and Congressional Democrats, the shutdown could then be viewed as simply a congressional political battle between the House and Senate.
Such a narrative removes President Trump from the criticism and undermines the entire strategy Democrats have been employing during the shutdown, which is attempting to rally their base against the President.
If the Senate kills Hoyer’s bill rather than the President, that completely shatters the Democrats’ entire political playbook with respect to how to handle the shutdown in the public eye.
