The left wants to bring down Donald Trump no matter what.
And it appears liberals don’t care how far they need to go.
Now Democrats made one unthinkable suggestion to start a civil war.
Liberals believe the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago is their best chance to put Donald Trump in prison.
Democrats are panicked over poll numbers showing Donald Trump will defeat Joe Biden and win a second term in 2024.
But commentators across the political spectrum realize that Joe Biden indicting and jailing his top political rival is a Rubicon-crossing moment that will change America forever.
Democrats jailing Trump would mean the left has completely given up on democracy and the American experiment.
In America, political differences are solved at the ballot box.
But Biden and the Democrats jailing Trump would mean Democrats are willing to throw that all away out of fear.
A New York Times editorial endorsed this sentiment.
The Times editorial board – like virtually everyone else on the left – believes Donald Trump must be guilty of some crime so it is up to the Justice Department to just make something up and put Trump behind bars.
But the Times editorial board does acknowledge that in America presidents avoid political retribution through the justice system.
“This board is aware that in deciding how Mr. Trump should be held accountable under the law it is necessary to consider not just whether criminal prosecution would be warranted but whether it would be wise. No American president has ever been criminally prosecuted after leaving office. When President Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon, he ensured that Nixon would not be prosecuted for crimes committed during the Watergate scandal; Ford explained this decision with the warning that such a prosecution posed grave risks of rousing ‘ugly passions’ and worsening political polarization,” the Times writes.
But the Times editorial board writers are so infected with hatred and derangement for Donald Trump that they call for jailing Trump even if it leads to the end of national unity, violent unrest in the streets or even a civil war.
Not only would conservatives view a Democrat administration trying to throw the leader of the Republican Party in prison as a direct attack on them, the Times then goes on to admit the rule of law would cease to exist in America because neither side would view the outcome as legitimate.
“That warning is just as salient today. Pursuing prosecution of Mr. Trump could further entrench support for him and play into the conspiracy theories he has sought to stoke. It could inflame the bitter partisan divide, even to the point of civil unrest. A trial, if it is viewed as illegitimate, could also further undermine confidence in the rule of law, whatever the eventual outcome,” the Times adds.
If Trump is convicted by a Washington, D.C. jury – where 95 percent of residents vote Democrat – conservatives will view the process as a sham process with a rigged outcome.
If Trump is acquitted liberals will think a jury let Trump off out of fear of what would happen.
And then liberal militias like Black Lives Matter and Antifa would burn cities to the ground like in the summer of 2020.
No one wants violence in the streets or civil unrest.
Even the Times admits their preferred path is dangerous and opens Pandora’s box.
The Times also realizes what will happen if the left prosecutes Trump.
Trump could still run and win in 2024.
If Trump cannot run or chooses not to run two years from now another Republican will likely win the presidency.
In that case, the Times concedes there will be massive pressure for a Republican president to play tit for tat and jail the Biden family, Merrick Garland, Christopher Wray and anyone seen as engaging in a plot to jail Trump and his supporters for political reasons.
“The risks of political escalation are obvious. The Democratic and Republican parties are already in the thick of a cycle of retribution that could last generations. There is a substantial risk that, if the Justice Department does prosecute Mr. Trump, future presidents — whether Mr. Trump himself or someone of his ilk — could misuse the precedent to punish political rivals. If their party takes a majority in the House of Representatives after the midterm elections, some Republicans have already threatened to impeach President Biden,” the Times editorial continues.
Prosecuting Donald Trump is a terrible idea.
Even its chief supporters – the New York Times editorial board – realizes this.
But the left hates Donald Trump so much the Times admits they are willing to throw away everything that makes America the world’s oldest and most stable democracy.
