Donald Trump is plotting a political comeback.
But he just got thrown a major curveball.
And Donald Trump just got some bad news about getting reinstated.
Facebook’s “Supreme Court” recently ruled that the platform could not indefinitely suspend Donald Trump.
The oversight board gave Facebook the choice of reinstating Trump, permanently banning Trump or giving Trump a time-limited suspension.
Facebook tipped their hand in which direction they intend to lean by announcing new moderation policies that no longer give politicians a pass on violating the platform’s terms of service because their speech is considered newsworthy.
The Verge reports:
Facebook plans to end its controversial policy that mostly shields politicians from the content moderation rules that apply to other users, a sharp reversal that could have global ramifications for how elected officials use the social network.
The change, which Facebook is set to announce as soon as Friday, comes after the Oversight Board — an independent group funded by Facebook to review its thorniest content rulings — affirmed its decision to suspend former President Donald Trump but critiqued the special treatment it gives politicians, stating that the “same rules should apply to all users.” The board gave Facebook till June 5th to respond to its policy recommendations.
Twitter’s already stated that Donald Trump will never be allowed back on their platform.
If Donald Trump is denied access to posting on Facebook or running campaign ads on Facebook it will be nearly impossible for Trump to mount a 2024 presidential campaign.
Whoever runs as the Democrat Party nominee will hold a massive advantage by virtue of being able to communicate directly with Facebook users.
By contrast, Donald Trump will depend on reaching Americans via the corporate media—all of whom, except for Fox, would be hostile to his candidacy.
In 2016 Donald Trump won the election in large part because he could avoid the corporate media filter and talk directly to the public.
In the 2020 election, social media companies actively censored the Hunter Biden laptop story because critics contend left-leaning Big Tech executives didn’t want to be “blamed” if Trump won again.
A Media Research Center poll commissioned after the election revealed this ploy may have tipped the election as one in six Biden voters say they would not have voted for him if they knew about this—and other—scandals.
There is no doubt social media companies play a major role in American elections.
Many Americans believe they function as the public square.
Donald Trump may have every intention of running for president in 2024.
But like Tucker Carlson once said—social media companies are so powerful that they can decide who gets to run for president.
