President Trump got some bad news.
One senator he thought he could count on as an ally showed his true colors.
And this GOP senator double-crossed Donald Trump. Three words showed how big a mistake he made.
Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton presented himself as a loyal ally of President Trump.
But when push came to shove, Senator Cotton announced he would vote to certify the results of the 2020 election.
Senator Cotton tried to cushion the blow for Trump supporters by claiming that he shared their concerns about voter fraud and supported the creation of a commission to study allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 election.
“I also share their disappointment with the election results. I, therefore, support a commission to study the last election and propose reforms to protect the integrity of our elections. And after Republicans win in Georgia, the Senate should also hold more hearings on these matters. All Americans deserve to have confidence in the elections that undergird our free government,” Senator Cotton stated.
But Senator Cotton claimed he would vote to certify the results of the 2020 election because Cotton argued that Congress’s role in this event was merely ceremonial.
“Nevertheless, the Founders entrusted our elections chiefly to the states — not Congress. They entrusted the election of our president to the people, acting through the Electoral College — not Congress,” Senator Cotton continued. “And they entrusted the adjudication of election disputes to the courts — not Congress. Under the Constitution and federal law, Congress’s power is limited to counting electoral votes submitted by the states.”
President Trump ripped Senator Cotton for voting to certify what the President stated was a fraudulent election.
But the President also took a shot at Senator Cotton’s political ambitions.
If President Trump does not run for re-election in 2024, Senator Cotton is expected to be one of the leading contenders.
However, President Trump noted that Republican voters want someone to fight on their behalf and that “they would never forget” Cotton folding at the moment of truth.
“How can you certify an election when the numbers being certified are verifiably WRONG. You will see the real numbers tonight during my speech, but especially on JANUARY 6th. @SenTomCotton Republicans have pluses & minuses, but one thing is sure, THEY NEVER FORGET!” the President posted on social media.
President Trump also ripped Cotton as part of the “surrender caucus” in the United States Senate for bowing to Democrat and media pressure by certifying fraudulent election results.
“The ‘Surrender Caucus’ within the Republican Party will go down in infamy as weak and ineffective ‘guardians’ of our Nation, who were willing to accept the certification of fraudulent presidential numbers!” the President added.
Republican voters forgive a great many things.
But the era of Donald Trump taught them the one thing they should never accept are politicians unwilling to fight.
