For five years Hillary Clinton and her allies thought they were going to get away with it.
But they got some bad news.
Hillary Clinton is nervous about news of this looming indictment.
For nearly two years Donald Trump and his supporters wondered what was going on with former United States Attorney John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the Russian collusion hoax.
Trump and his supporters began to wonder if any Deep State officials would face the music for trying to stage a coup against the duly elected president.
Now there is a partial answer.
The New York Times reported that Durham planned to ask a grand jury to indict Perkins Coie attorney and former Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann on charges he lied to the FBI during a 2016 interview.
“John H. Durham, the special counsel appointed by the Trump administration to scrutinize the Russia investigation, has told the Justice Department that he will ask a grand jury to indict a prominent cybersecurity lawyer on a charge of making a false statement to the F.B.I., people familiar with the matter said,” The New York Times reported.
The allegations of lying to the FBI stem from when Sussmann met with James Baker – at the time the FBI’s top lawyer – back in September 2016 to raise allegations about supposedly “suspicious” transmission between a server in Trump Tower and one owner by the Kremlin-linked Alfa Bank.
During the meeting, Sussmann told Baker that he was not working on behalf of any client even though at the time Perkins Coie was on retainer to the Clinton campaign.
Sean M. Berkowitz and Michael S. Bosworth – who represent Sussmann – claimed Sussmann did not commit any crimes.
“Mr. Sussmann has committed no crime,” Berkowitz and Bosworth stated. “Any prosecution here would be baseless, unprecedented and an unwarranted deviation from the apolitical and principled way in which the Department of Justice is supposed to do its work. We are confident that if Mr. Sussmann is charged, he will prevail at trial and vindicate his good name.”
However, The Times reports Durham found two pieces of evidence that buttressed the allegations that Sussmann made false statements to the FBI.
The first were billing records showing Sussmann billed the time to the Clinton campaign.
“Moreover, internal billing records Mr. Durham is said to have obtained from Perkins Coie are said to show that when Mr. Sussmann logged certain hours as working on the Alfa Bank matter — though not the meeting with Mr. Baker — he billed the time to Mrs. Clinton’s 2016 campaign,” The New York Times reported.
The second was a 2017 deposition Sussmann gave to Congress where Sussmann said he “sought the meeting on behalf of an unnamed client who was a cybersecurity expert and had helped analyze the data.”
Durham believes that unnamed client is the Clinton campaign.
Trump supporters hope this is the first domino to fall that will eventually hold more senior figures at the FBI accountable for concocting the Russian collusion hoax to frame Trump as an agent of the Russian government.
