Donald Trump confronted the challenge of the migrant caravan invasion head-on.
He put Secretary of Defense Mattis in charge of devising a strategy to use the military to thwart a growing national security threat.
And Mattis came through with this jaw-dropping order that every Trump supporter was waiting for.
Trump stunned officials in Washington when he ordered 5,400 troops to the border to provide support assistance to the Border Patrol.
Troops fortified border barriers with razor wire and built encampments to house migrants as their asylum claims were processed to help end the disastrous catch and release policy.
Trump’s critics in the fake news media – as well as some pro-amnesty RINOs like Arizona Senator Jeff Flake – decried the move as an election year stunt.
They claimed – without citing evidence – that Trump only ordered the troops to the border to boost GOP base turnout ahead of the midterm elections.
They figured once the elections were over Trump would end the missions and about hyping the threat the caravan posed to American national security.
This wasn’t the first time the fake news media was wrong about Trump or the caravan.
Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Jamie Davis announced that Secretary of Defense Mattis approved an extension of the troop deployment through January 2019.
“The Secretary of Defense has approved an extension of the ongoing Department of Defense (DoD) support to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) response to migrant caravan arrivals. DoD support to DHS is authorized until Jan. 31, 2019,” Col. Davis stated.
No one should have been surprised by this announcement.
Both Mattis and Trump plainly stated this mission was not some political stunt and that it was vital to defending America.
“We don’t do stunts in this department,” Mattis fired back at reporters when they asked him if the deployment was an election year stunt.
He said the military’s mission “is practical support based on the request from the commissioner of customs and border police.”
Trump also told reporters from the Washington Post in an Oval Office interview that he could continue to use the military to secure the border in case Congress refused to fund his proposed border wall.
“We need Democrat votes to have a wall. Now, if we don’t get it, will I get it done another way? I might get it done another way. There are other potential ways that I can do it. You saw what we did with the military, just coming in with the barbed wire and the fencing, and various other things,” Trump told the Post reporters.
Trump supporters were thrilled by this decision.
The President following through on his promises to take any lawful action to defend Americans from the scourge of illegal immigration is why he retains the loyal support of his base.
The military’ job is to defend America’s border.
Fake news reporters are only complaining about Trump ordering the military to the border because they believe illegal aliens should be able to pour into the country at will.
But Mattis’ order that the troops will continue their deployment on the Southern border shows the Trump administration is committed to preventing that nightmare from becoming a reality.
