Jen Psaki’s rocky tenure as press secretary just got worse.
The latest debacle came from an unexpected source.
Jen Psaki made one mistake that she will live to regret.
Like every Democrat White House, the Biden administration enjoyed a friendly relationship from an adoring press corps.
The corporate media hated Donald Trump and is invested in Biden succeeding to prevent Trump from running again in 2024.
But some reporters are getting annoyed with the administration because Biden’s press shop demands the ability to review, edit and censor quotes from White House officials before their words are used in press stories.
That’s because the Biden White House frequently demands that interviews with administration officials be conducted on grounds known colloquially as “background with quote approval,” according to five reporters who cover the White House for outlets other than POLITICO.
In practice, that means the information from an interview can be used in the story, but in order for the person’s name to be attached to a quote, the reporter must transcribe the quotes they want and then send them to the communications team to approve, veto or edit them.
POLITICO reported that the Trump administration was not granted this privilege as often as the Biden folks, and the last White House to demand the ability as much as the Biden folks was the Obama administration.
Many Americans were not surprised that the media allowed the Obama and Biden White Houses to abuse a press favor the Trump administration did not get equal access to.
Jen Psaki showed no remorse for the administration requiring the corporate media to make the exact message the White House wanted communicated to the public made into print.
“We would welcome any outlet banning the use of anonymous background quotes that attack people personally or speak to internal processes from people who don’t even work in the Administration,” Psaki sneered at the critics in a statement to POLITICO. “At the same time, we make policy experts available in a range of formats to ensure context and substantive detail is available for stories.”
Psaki warned any reporters that complained not to count on continued access to Biden administration officials.
“If outlets are not comfortable with that attribution for those officials they of course don’t need to utilize those voices,” Psaki continued.
If Americans needed another reason to distrust the corporate media and the Biden White House, Jen Psaki just provided a fresh rationale to look skeptically at the press coverage of this administration.
Biden’s received a greater percentage of positive coverage than any president of the last 30 years—Barack Obama included.
When Americans read stories about the Biden administration, many Americans will dismiss them out of hand because any positive coverage will be viewed as a hostage situation where the press follows along with the administration’s talking points out of fear of getting cut off from access to power.
