As a former Democrat President, Jimmy Carter remains a big player in the party.
This is especially true today with some of his more far-left views becoming fully embraced in the party.
And the reason he turned on a top Democrat will leave you speechless.
In many ways, former President Jimmy Carter was before his time.
While today, Democrats are calling for radical change, the party of his time was much less willing to rock the boat.
So when he formed the Department of Education, Energy, and relinquished control of the Panama Canal all in one term, he was hit with a heavy defeat against Ronald Reagan in 1980.
His defeat was so harsh that it set the Democrat Party back for more than a decade.
But since then, he has regained popularity among his fellow Democrats, even winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
So now his voice matters once again, despite the fact he doesn’t speak out much.
And in a rare statement, Carter seems to go after leading Democrats like Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.
Speaking in front of an audience this week, he advocated for an age limit for candidates for President, seeming to pen 80 as a good spot.
“I hope there’s an age limit,” Carter said. “You know, if I were just 80 years old — if I was 15 years younger, I don’t believe I could undertake the duties I experienced when I was president. For one thing, you had to be very flexible with your mind. You have to be able to go from one subject to another, concentrate on each one adequately and then put them all together in a very comprehensive way.”
Biden is 76 years old, while Sanders is 78.
So both of them would be well over the age of 80 by their second term if they were to win the presidency in 2020.
This statement comes on the heels of concerns for Biden’s mental health becoming a major concern for his campaign.
In recent weeks Biden has been in the spotlight for making ridiculous and aged statements.
His most recent, and perhaps most concerning gaffe, involved him completely veering off point in a question about slavery.
After being asked about what Americans should do to “repair the legacy of slavery,” he went on a series of incoherent tangents, eventually stating that we need to teach parents to “make sure you have the record player on at night” when children are sleeping.
And this is just one of many gaffes that bring his age into question.
Responding to Carter’s comment, President Trump doesn’t seem to agree with the concept of an age limit, citing many older people who are completely mentally fit.
But he does show concern for Biden.
“I met with a man the other day who was 85 years old, the sharpest guy you’ll ever meet,” Trump said. “I’ve dealt with people who were 92, 93, 94, and they were totally sharp.”
“I can’t speak for Biden,” he continued. “I know nothing about it, but he’s given some very strange answers. That I can tell you.”
Do you think Joe Biden is too old to run for president?
