Democrats are finally trying to fix the horrific problem that they caused.
They’re having to bring back Donald Trump’s policies.
Joe Biden is copying a Trump-era rule as the border crisis continues out of control.
The majority of Americans disapprove of the job President Biden is doing on immigration, as Democrats start thinking about the presidential election next year.
Only 13% of Americans believe the situation at the southern border has improved on President Biden’s watch and just 31% of Americans now approve of how Biden is handling immigration, according to a January Yahoo News/YouGov poll.
Illegal immigration has become such a serious liability for the future of Biden, and the Democrats in general, that the Biden administration has proposed a new restriction on asylum-seekers that is close to a policy from the Trump administration.
The new rule would prevent migrants, in most cases, from applying for asylum in the USA if they journey through other safe countries first without making asylum claims.
“The proposed rule would encourage migrants to avail themselves of lawful, safe, and orderly pathways into the United States, or otherwise to seek asylum or other protection in countries through which they travel, thereby reducing reliance on human smuggling networks that exploit migrants for financial gain,” the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice wrote in a notice of proposed rulemaking Tuesday. “It would do so by introducing a rebuttable presumption of asylum ineligibility for certain noncitizens who neither avail themselves of a lawful, safe, and orderly pathway to the United States nor seek asylum or other protection in a country through which they travel.”
“In the absence of such a measure, which would be implemented on a temporary basis, the number of migrants expected to travel without authorization to the United States is expected to increase significantly, to a level that risks undermining the Departments’ continued ability to safely, effectively, and humanely enforce and administer U.S. immigration law, including the asylum system, in the face of exceptionally challenging circumstances,” the two departments continued.
The problem for Biden is that he has opened himself up to criticism from his own party.
Prominent Democrats are attacking Biden for the proposed rule.
“We are deeply disappointed that the Administration has chosen to move forward with publishing this proposed rule, which only perpetuates the harmful myth that asylum seekers are a threat to this nation,” reads a statement signed by four Democrats: Sen. Bob Menendez and Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Sen. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, and Sen. Alex Padilla of California. “We urge President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas to reverse course and pave a better path forward that protects the right to asylum while addressing the real operational challenges at our Southern Border.”
