Democrats have just lost control over the House of Representatives.
And Joe Biden is panicking like never before.
But now, Biden just made one desperate play to try and keep Nancy Pelosi in power.
With the official results in Arizona and California finally confirming a Republican flip for control over the House of Representatives, Democrats’ trifecta over the federal government has been shattered.
And now, Joe Biden’s ability to impose his agenda on the rest of the American people has been crippled as a result.
But while Biden continues to deal with the fallout over the loss of the House, he is busy working to try and save the political career of one of his top allies.
Nancy Pelosi is now looking at a scenario where she won’t just lose her position as speaker of the House, but possibly her control over the Democratic caucus in the House of Representatives altogether.
And with Pelosi having previously given signs that she would be stepping down from office in the event of a Democrat defeat in the 2022 midterms, she is now having second thoughts even as members of her own party call for her removal from power.
But now, Pelosi may be getting a last-minute bailout from Joe Biden, who is publicly calling on Pelosi to remain in power as head of the Democratic caucus in the House.
This comes in spite of the growing opposition to both Pelosi and Biden among some Democrats, who blame the two for the midterm defeat in the House, and fear that Biden’s own political shortfalls will result in Democrats losing control over the White House in 2024 as well.
Politico reports, “Of all the Democrats delighted by the party’s surprisingly strong midterm showing, few were more overjoyed than President Joe Biden and Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who in the twilight of their careers have become the faces of their party.
“And as it became clear on Wednesday that Republicans would have, at best, a narrow majority, Biden told Pelosi he’d like her to remain in office, to serve with him in what could be the final two years of their decades in public life.”
The move comes as a stunning about-face from what many Democrats had been expecting.
The common thought was that Pelosi would resign from Congress altogether in the event of a Democrat defeat in the midterms.
Now, she is not only backing off from her previous comments about retirement, but she’s enjoying the support of Joe Biden in demanding Democrats keep her around as the head of their party in the House.
In a phone call held after the midterms, Biden told Pelosi, “I hope you stick [around]” and all signs point to him throwing his backing behind her remaining in power well beyond what many Democrats were comfortable with.
However, it’s not yet clear whether or not other Democrats will end up going along with Biden’s wishes, and Pelosi herself has yet to make any formal announcement over whether or not she will in fact be stepping down next year.
