Speaking at a White House event that celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act, Biden told the children in the audience to come talk to him about getting some ice cream because “daddy owes you.”
“I want to say one thing to your children: I know some really great ice cream places around here, and daddy owes you,” Biden said. “Okay? So, talk to me afterwards.”
Many social media users described it as “creepy” for Biden to refer to himself in such a manner when addressing children.
“Exactly how hard is it for Joe Biden to NOT be a complete creep around kids??” Canary CEO Dan K. Eberhart asked on Twitter.
Of course, this isn’t even close to the first time Biden has drawn controversy for how he interacts with kids – he was recently slammed for nibbling at a young child at the end of his European trip in July.
Biden was caught on camera putting his face in the girl’s shoulder and nibbled on her for several seconds while the girl squirmed.
Biden then tried to kiss the girl on the head and the child tried to move away.
Fox News host Jesse Watters said on the cable news channel, “Here’s the president nibbling at a terrified baby in Finland. It’s not presidential. It’s weird.”
“The only time men do that is with their own children at home, maybe – not with strange babies in the middle of Europe with cameras rolling,” Watters added. “He’s nuzzling and sniffing random kids. Joe showed more affection to this young Finnish girl than to his own granddaughter in Arkansas.”
He also came under fire last year for a remark he made during a speech to the National Education Association, the nation’s largest teachers’ union.
Biden addressed a young woman in the crowd whom he claimed to have known for a long time.
“You gotta say hi to me,” Biden said mid-speech. “We go back a long way. She was 12, I was 30. But anyway, this woman helped me get an awful lot done.”
“By the way, I’d sit on the stand and it’d get hot. I got hairy legs that turn blonde in the sun. And the kids used to come up and reach in the pool and rub my leg down so it was straight and then watch the hair come back up again,” Biden once shared in a random anecdote back in 2019.
