Joe Biden’s disastrous summer continues to unfold like a slow-motion train wreck.
But Biden’s problems are Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer’s problems.
And now Joe Biden was forced to beat a humiliating retreat in the face of a sexual misconduct scandal.
Back in March, Joe Biden said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo should leave office if a New York State attorney general’s report found credible evidence that multiple women accusing Cuomo of sexual harassment told the truth.
Biden even claimed Cuomo could face criminal prosecution over these allegations.
Reporters asked Biden if he still believed Cuomo should resign after New York Attorney General Letitia James produced her report that resulted from 179 interviews and 74,000 pieces of evidence which concluded that Governor Cuomo sexually harassed 11 current and former employees.
“I stand by that statement,” Biden told the press.
When asked if Cuomo should resign Biden responded “Yes.”
However, Biden laid the groundwork to hedge his bets when Biden refused to sign on to calls by leaders in the New York state legislature to begin impeachment proceedings against Governor Cuomo.
“Let’s take one thing at a time here,” Biden told reporters. “I think he should resign. I understand that the state legislature may decide to impeach. I don’t know that for a fact, I have not read all that data.”
The next day it was clear that Biden would not push very hard to remove Cuomo – a credibly accused sexual predator – from office.
Reporters asked Jen Psaki during the White House press briefing if Joe Biden would personally call to demand he resign.
“No,” Psaki stated.
Psaki also made it clear that Biden planned to steer clear of any impeachment discussion.
“The president made clear yesterday that Gov. Cuomo should resign and I believe we should start with that… we’ll leave it to them to speak to that,” Psaki added. “The president made clear because of the abhorrent allegations … that it is time for Gov. Cuomo to resign.”
The New York attorney general’s report included a disturbing allegation that Governor Cuomo manipulated state rules to see a young female state trooper placed on his protective detail.
Cuomo engaged in sexually suggestive conversation with the woman, invited her upstairs at the Governor’s Mansion, reportedly tried to kiss her, and asked the woman if she liked pain.
If Biden really wanted Cuomo out of office, Biden would lend his support to the impeachment effort.
But given two opportunities – once on his own when answering questions and once when his spokeswoman had the chance to clarify – Biden retreated from a forceful call to remove Andrew Cuomo from office.
