Donald Trump and John McCain were political rivals until the very end.
Everyone knows President Trump considered John McCain the avatar of the corrupt RINO establishment that he vanquished in 2016.
And now Barack Obama revealed what John McCain secretly thought about Donald Trump.
Barack Obama’s new memoir “A Promised Land” gave Obama’s take on the events of his political life.
His 2008 election victory over John McCain is a central event in this book.
There were two defining moments of that election – Barack Obama’s blowout win in South Carolina over Hillary Clinton in the Democrat primary which put him on track to win the nomination and John McCain selecting Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.
It’s been lost to history and overlooked in the wake of Obama’s landslide win, but with McCain picking Palin and her flawless performance at the 2008 Republican National Convention, McCain took a polling lead over Obama.
McCain’s inept performance during the Wall Street meltdown shifted the race back to Obama which led to the Democrat ticket cruising to a landslide victory.
In the book Obama attacked McCain picking Palin as opening the door to the populist streak in American politics that led to Donald Trump.
Instead of addressing the frustration with the elite consensus on endless wars, open borders, and global trade deals, Obama waved off all of these criticisms as racist.
“Through Palin,” Obama fumed, “it seemed as if the dark spirits that had long been lurking on the edges of the modern Republican Party – xenophobia, anti intellectualism, paranoid conspiracy theories, an antipathy toward black and brown folks – were finding their way to centre stage.”
Obama wrote that McCain hated the idea of a foreign policy that put America – and not the New World Order – first, an immigration system that defended the American worker and keeping jobs in America as opposed to shipping them off to China.
Former President Obama wrote of Palin that “her spectacular rise and her validation as a candidate would provide a template for future politicians, shifting his party’s center and the country’s politics overall in a direction he abhorred.”
Obama claimed – as all liberals do – that putting the country first, McCain would have picked someone other than Palin.
“I’d like to think that given the chance to do it over again, he might have chosen differently. I believe he really did put his country first. We’re better than this.”
To liberals, “putting country first” means Republicans stab conservatives in the back and agree to whatever demands the left puts in front of them.
There is never a time where Democrat politicians are asked to “put their country first” and double-cross their base voters to cave to Republicans’ wishes.
