And the legal system just moved to silence Donald Trump in a horrifying way.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan placed a gag order on former President Donald Trump in the case related to the 2020 election on Monday.
The gag order threatens Trump with jail time if he “publicly targets” the judge, special counsel Jack Smith, and “any other court personnel.” the Washington Post reported.
Trump’s lawyers argued that the gag order was an attempt to hurt his 2024 election chances as he gains in the polls.
“His administration’s plan is quite simple: unleash a 45-page speaking indictment, discuss and leak its talking points in the press, and then cynically attempt to invoke the Court’s authority to prevent President Trump and those acting on his behalf from presenting his side of the story to the American people during a political campaign,” lawyers argued.
“First Amendment protections yield to the administration of justice and to the protection of witnesses,” Chutkan claimed, according to POLITICO. “His presidential candidacy does not give him carte blanche to vilify … public servants who are simply doing their job.”
“All interested parties in this matter, including the parties and their counsel, are prohibited from making any public statements, or directing others to make any public statements, that target (1) the Special Counsel prosecuting this case or his staff; (2) defense counsel or their staff; (3) any of this court’s staff or other supporting personnel; or (4) any reasonably foreseeable witness or the substance of their testimony,” the order read.
The Trump campaign released a statement in response to the gag order saying:
“Today’s decision is an absolute abomination and another partisan knife stuck in the heart of our Democracy by Crooked Joe Biden, who was granted the right to muzzle his political opponent, the leading candidate for the Presidency in 2024, and the most popular political leader in America, President Donald J. Trump,” the statement says. “President Trump will continue to fight for our Constitution, the American people’s right to support him, and to keep our country free of the chains of weaponized and targeted law enforcement.”
“We’re being railroaded. And I have other trials where we’re being railroaded. You saw yesterday where they took away my right to speak. I won’t be able to speak like I’m speaking to you,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday before entering a New York courtroom.
“I am leading Joe Biden and I’m being restricted. My speech has been taken away from me. I’m a candidate that’s running for office and I’m not allowed to speak,” Trump said.
