Family members are leveraging their connection with Kamala Harris in underhanded ways.
And it’s affecting America’s global relations.
Kamala Harris caused a giant headache for Biden with an international scandal.
Meena Harris is the niece of Vice President Kamala Harris who has used her famous aunt to her advantage.
In the past, Meena sold Kamala-themed apparel like “Kamala Harris Swimsuit,” “Phenomenal Kamala Tank” and “Kamala T-shirt” until ethics lawyers from the Biden transition told her not to restock.
Meena also wrote a children’s book prominently featuring her aunt as a selling point.
“‘Kamala and Maya’s Big Idea,’ which was published in June 2020 before Biden picked Kamala as vice president, poses further ethical knots. White House officials say that Meena would be prohibited from publishing that book now because it uses Kamala’s name in the title and her likeness on the cover.” Politico noted.
However, Meena didn’t comment when she was asked whether she was still accepting royalties.
Meena caused an even bigger headache for the Biden administration by sticking her nose into India’s internal politics.
“Her series of posts have helped provoke a backlash from the Indian government and some of its supporters, adding an unexpected wrinkle to India-U.S. relations just as Biden is seeking to engage with the country’s leaders,” Politico noted.
Newspapers all over India published Meena Harris’ comments and identified her by her connection to her aunt.
Meena Harris’ social media accounts, which gained attention after the election, are “potentially complicating the Biden administration’s efforts to strengthen its relationship with India,” Politico noted. “Some in India have celebrated her activism while others denounced it as meddling in the country’s internal affairs.”
Despite the problems she may be causing, Meena seems to have no thoughts on stopping her activism, writing on Twitter: “I won’t be intimidated, and I won’t be silenced.”
“Weird to see a photo of yourself burned by an extremist mob but imagine what they would do if we lived in India,” she wrote in a separate post. “I’ll tell you—23 yo labor rights activist Nodeep Kaur was arrested, tortured & sexually assaulted in police custody. She’s been detained without bail for over 20 days.”
“This isn’t just about agricultural policy,” she later added. “It’s also about the persecution of a vocal religious minority. It’s police violence, militant nationalism, and attacks on labor rights. It’s global authoritarianism. Don’t tell me to stay out of your affairs. These are all of our issues.”
If Kamala Harris is going to live up to her promise of upholding “the highest ethical standards,” she needs to keep Meena from profiting off her connection through either book deals or social media attention.
