Kamala Harris is one of the biggest political liabilities in the Democrat Party.
Harris’s future on the ticket is very much in doubt.
Kamala Harris got some bad news about one Democrat angling to replace her.
Prior to November 8, Democrats saw Joe Biden’s 42 percent approval rating and obvious senility as a toxic combination that rendered Biden unelectable in 2024.
Biden continued to maintain that he was running for re-election leading to talk of a prominent Democrat such as California Governor Gavin Newsom running against Biden in the primary.
But Donald Trump announcing he was running for re-election and Democrats scoring a better-than-expected showing in the midterm elections tamped down any talk of Joe Biden facing a primary challenge.
Now Gavin Newsom publicly swore off running against Biden in 2024 in an interview with left-wing activist Jonathan Martin of POLITICO.
POLITICO reported:
“I’ve told everyone in the White House, from the chief of staff to the first lady,” he recounted to me as we sat on the top floor of California’s now-ceremonial governor’s mansion on election night.
His message to Ron Klain and Jill Biden over the summer — when he visited Washington amid growing speculation, and considerable West Wing irritation, that he was plotting a primary challenge — was to count him as a firm supporter of Biden’s reelection: “I’m all in, count me in,” he said he told them.
Newsom relayed the same to Biden himself on election night. …
“I’m all in; put me in coach,” Newsom told Biden. “We have your back.”
Newsom tried to spin himself as a dyed-in-the-wool supporter of Joe Biden.
“He not only beat Trump once, I think he can beat him again,” Newsom added, “I hope he runs, I’ll enthusiastically support him.”
Newsom spent $150,000 in campaign money on running TV ads in Florida falsely claiming California was the true freedom state because Newsom supported abortion on demand until the moment of birth.
The California governor went out of his way to position himself as the foil for Florida’s Ron DeSantis to brand himself as the Democrat willing to fight Republicans.
In the interview with Martin, Newsom also, unprompted, brought up his friendship with Kamala Harris to try and prevent Martin from speculating that Newsom was only swearing off a 2024 campaign if Biden ran for re-election.
“It’s frustrating because I have so much reverence and respect for not only the president but the vice president is an old friend, for all of those interesting things you guys all love to write about, we’ve known each other for 25 years,” Newsom added.
Newsom also claimed he would not run in 2024 if Biden did not, but that came off about as convincing as a Bill Clinton apology.
There is no upside for Newsom to talk up his 2024 ambitions.
It would make him look disloyal.
And the fact that Newsom was the one to bring up his relationship with Harris and complain that the media never wrote about how much he liked Harris came across like a sports team owner that gives his head coach a vote of confidence right before firing them after the very next game.
