Democrats are bracing for one of the biggest fights in recent memory.
And all hell is about to break loose.
But Kamala Harris is about to run head-first into this massive defeat.
Joe Biden put Kamala Harris in charge of the administration’s so-called “voting rights” push.
Part of this portfolio included pressuring Congress to pass what Republicans deemed the “Corrupt Politicians Act.”
Republicans argue this bill will rig elections in the Democrats’ favor by eliminating any guardrails against fraud.
This legislation will effectively end the ability of states to enforce voter ID laws while mandating mass mailing of unsolicited ballots across the country and also imposing ballot harvesting.
While no Republicans support this legislation, the Democrats don’t even have 50 votes on their own side to pass the bill.
That’s because West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin’s stated on multiple occasions he thinks the legislation is too broad and that he does not support eliminating the filibuster in order to pass it.
Part of Harris’ new mission is to rally outside groups to pressure Manchin to support this centerpiece legislation.
“Harris, who asked for the job and discussed its parameters with President Joe Biden over the past month, is expected to focus on building outside support for voting rights ― including by enlisting the help of corporations ― as much as she will focus on trying to woo the few congressional Democrats who remain reluctant to pass the party’s wide-ranging democracy reform bill, H.R. 1, or a revitalization of the Voting Rights Act named after the late civil rights icon and Georgia Rep. John Lewis,” The Huffington Post reported.
And Harris will also travel to Republican-run states where legislatures are passing election integrity laws.
“The aide said it was possible Harris will travel to states where GOP-controlled legislatures are working to restrict voting rights. Republicans, inspired by former President Donald Trump’s escalation of long-standing GOP lies about widespread voter fraud, have introduced more than 300 pieces of legislation aiming to restrict voting in more than 40 states, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. While most of those proposals are unlikely to become law, Florida, Georgia and Texas have already seen major political showdowns over voting rights this year,” The Huffington Post also reported.
The Democrat Party base cares very much about passing what Republicans call the “Corrupt Politicians Act.”
However, Biden knows that isn’t going to happen because Democrats do not have the votes to nuke the legislative filibuster.
By making a big show about how Kamala Harris is leading the charge for so-called “voting rights,” Biden may be trying to soothe the Democrat base ahead of this eventual legislative defeat.
