Democrats’ underhanded scheme has backfired in a remarkable way.
They’re paying a high price for their illegal behavior.
Law enforcement got an order for arrests that will put top Democrats in jail.
Texas Democrats thought that if they stopped doing their job that they were voted in to do then the system would grind to a stop without enough votes for the Texas legislature to make quorum.
Last month, 50 Democratic House lawmakers decided to hop out of town to Washington, D.C. to try and stop legislation they disliked from passing.
However, Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan (R) said that the process of arresting the rogue lawmakers “will begin in earnest immediately,” according to The Texas Tribune.
Phelan backed up this statement by signing the arrest warrants for 52 absent lawmakers on Tuesday.
However, Democrats attempted to seek protection from arrest through the courts.
While a lower court ruled to block the arrests of the 45 Democrats, on Thursday the Texas Supreme Court halted the order that was protecting the rogue Democrats.
“Earlier today, the House sergeant-at-arms deputized members of Texas law enforcement to assist in the House’s efforts to compel a quorum. That process will begin in earnest immediately,” a spokesperson for Phelan said Thursday.
The warrants allow the sergeant-at-arms to take custody of any member named under warrant and “bring said member before the bar of the House instantly” to participate in the special legislative session.
Many Democrats were outraged at warrants that would force them to do the job they were voted in to perform.
“Nobody can detain or drag us back to the House floor against our will,” state Rep. Gene Wu told The Texas Tribune. “We will not be willing participants in the silencing of our communities.”
However some Democrats decided to come back and 95 lawmakers were at the House on Monday, near the hundred that would make quorum and all the Texas House to pass bills.
“You all threw us under the bus today! Why?” Rep. Ana-Maria Ramos tweeted, tagging fellow Democratic Reps. James Talarico, Mary Gonzalez, and Joe Moody.
Democratic Rep. Gina Hinojosa also attacked Democrats for appearing at the House.
“For transparency purposes it is important to note that the following Democrats are on the Floor now & no longer breaking quorum: @jamestalarico @RepMaryGonzalez @moodyforelpaso @ArtFierro79,” she tweeted. “Quorum is still not met. Praying no other Democrats willingly go to Floor.”
Democratic state Rep. Jasmine Crockett ripped into the lawmakers that returned to Texas over the weekend: “I’ve said this before… it’s a Team Sport… now we see who plays what positions on the Team… The fact that some of us secured a Temporary Restraining Order to protect ALL of us, yet some are trying to please the Governor and His OPPRESSIVE Agenda?! JUST WOW!”
