Mike Pence faithfully served Donald Trump as Vice President.
And Pence fully expects to stand for re-election next November.
But Mike Pence couldn’t believe his ears when he heard who might replace him.
A challenger Presidential candidate only has so many chances to shake up the dynamics of a race against an incumbent President.
The two biggest opportunities are their acceptance speech at the convention and the selection of a running mate.
Former Vice President Joe Biden is the leading contender on the Democrats’ side to take on President Trump.
During a campaign swing through New Hampshire, Biden held a town hall event where the question of a running mate came up.
Biden presents the false claim that he can “unify” the country and bring Democrats and Republicans together to end political polarization as the centerpiece of his campaign.
To that end, Biden went so far as to claim he would select a Republican as his Vice Presidential nominee.
“The answer is I would, but I can’t think of one now,” Biden claimed. “No I’m serious, here’s what I mean. Let me explain that,” the 77-year-old continued. “You know, there’s some really decent Republicans that are out there still, but here’s the problem right now… they’ve got to step up.”
“Who knew what my priorities were and knew what I wanted to do. We could disagree on tactic, but strategically we’d have to be on the exact same page,” the former Vice President added.
That caused some heartburn on the left.
Last month, when Biden’s campaign looked to be in a more precarious position, Biden looked to get in good with the left by playing to their worship of identity politics.
Biden ticked off a number of women and minorities that he would pick from as his running mate if he secured the nomination.
“Not just people who are running. I could start naming people, but the press would think that was who I picked if I were the nominee. But there’s an incredible number of people,” Biden stated. “The former assistant attorney general who got fired who was just in Delaware. The leader of the, uh, the woman who should’ve been the governor of Georgia, the African American woman … the two senators from the state of New Hampshire. I mean, there’s an enormous number of qualified people.”
The idea of a Democrat and Republican “unity” ticket is a unicorn the fake news media chases every election.
But there is next to zero chance Biden would actually select a Republican running mate.
Biden is not loved by the progressive Democrat base and any committed activists and ideologically oriented voters could sit home.
If Biden did pick a Republican, they would have to satisfy the left on key cultural issues such as support for banning and confiscating firearms, the radical homosexual agenda and abortion on demand.
That would automatically eliminate the possibility of anything more than the narrow party crossover that the Democrat and Republican nominees normally pick up.
