Mike Pence is the comparably quieter number two to President Trump.
With most of his work being behind the scenes, he isn’t a regular fixture in the news cycle.
But in a rare show of force, Pence said one thing destroying a Democrat’s life.
Muslim Representative Ilhan Omar is facing harsh criticism from figures on both sides of the political spectrum over her anti-Semitism.
For years it has been on full display, with her allying closely with fiercely anti-Israel figures and making disparaging comments about Israelis.
But until a recent tweet, her anti-Semitism has been largely ignored.
In response to a tweet about politicians who support Israel, she responds that their support is “all about the Benjamins,” implying that Israel is buying off U.S. politicians.
This is a long-held portion of an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory that Israel, and therefore Jews, control the U.S. government.
While Omar initially stood by her comments, days later she was forced to come out and make a weak apology, while still saying she is “standing strong.”
But many aren’t buying it, and are calling on her to be removed from her position on the House Foreign Relations Committee.
With her views, it is troubling to many that she is on such a powerful committee that deals with foreign interests on a regular basis.
One person who is coming out as one of the most vocal calling on her ousting is Vice President Mike Pence.
Pence is a staunch supporter of Israel and someone who previously served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
In a statement, he grills her for her statements.
“Representative Omar’s tweets were a disgrace,” Pence said. “Anti-Semitism has no place in the United States Congress or anywhere in our country or the free world. I think it was right for Democrat leaders to condemn those remarks.”
He then calls on Omar to not just be condemned, but to be punished for her statements, saying:
“I think it’s important that people that articulate anti-Semitic views are also held accountable … There were consequences to what he said. And unless Representative Omar resigns from Congress, at minimum Democrat leaders should remove her from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.”
Pence also cites the need for the Foreign Relations Committee to support Israel.
He calls anti-Semitism on the committee “dangerous,” especially considering the effects it had on Jews during World War II.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is not indicating she will remove Omar from the position despite the outcry.
Since taking control of the House, Democrats control who sits on House Committees.
If they want to, they can easily strip Omar from her position on the Committee.
But Democrats seem to be more apt to defend her statements than they would if she were a Republican.
Omar is a rising star in the Party, as a Muslim woman, Democrats are doing their best to make her into a major figure.
Do you think Rep. Omar should lose her committee position?
