Former Vice President Mike Pence got some bad news.
Pence was not expecting this at all.
And Mike Pence just found out this Republican will take his job.
Former Vice President Pence has his eyes on 2024.
Many Republicans do.
If Donald Trump runs for a second term, Trump will be the odds-on favorite to win the nomination.
But if Trump does not decide to run for re-election, the Republican field is already starting to break off into tiers of candidates.
Former Trump campaign pollster Tony Fabrizio produced the last survey confirming this reality.
If Donald Trump runs in 2024, Fabrizio’s polling shows Trump holding a commanding 51 percent of the vote.
No other contender reaches double digits.
But if Trump does not run, several contenders stand above the rest.
Mike Pence, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Texas Senator Ted Cruz form the top tier.
POLITICO exclusively reports:
But when Fabrizio combined the results with Trump voters’ second choices, DeSantis and Pence were tied with 22 percent, with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz coming in a close third, with 19 percent.
“If President Trump chose not to run, it’s clear his supporters are already gravitating towards VP Mike Pence, FL. Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Ted Cruz,” Fabrizio said.
Mike Pence figured to retain a sizeable chunk of support because of his name recognition, service as Donald Trump’s Vice President and from the fact that traditional Republicans tend to back the next guy in line.
Ted Cruz finished as the runner-up in the last primary and built his own base of very conservative voters so it’s not surprising he registers in the top tier.
But Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is the big surprise.
DeSantis’ star grew bright over the course of the coronavirus pandemic as DeSantis rejected the failed lockdowns and mask mandates promoted by Dr. Fauci, the activist media and other big blue state Governors like Andrew Cuomo and Gavin Newsom.
Instead, DeSantis kept Florida businesses open, children were in school for in-person learning and there were no mask mandates.
DeSantis also refused to let the media smear him for choosing science and facts over fear and hysteria.
Clips of DeSantis shutting down pro-Democrat reporters trying to lob partisan attacks went viral and the momentum behind DeSantis running for president grew.
That culminated with Ron DeSantis winning 43 percent of the CPAC presidential straw poll vote on the ballot that Donald Trump did not appear on with Mike Pence getting one percent.
Ron DeSantis is the governor of the largest battleground state in the nation.
DeSantis’ approval rating is over 50 percent.
Ron DeSantis’ biography—he is a veteran, popular big state governor and long-time Trump supporter—can appeal to all factions of the Republican Party as well as swing voters.
If DeSantis wins a resounding re-election victory in Florida, it will catapult him to frontrunner status in the 2024 GOP presidential primary if Donald Trump does not run.
And that was a position Mike Pence once assumed belonged to him.
