With Robert Mueller’s investigation losing support fast, he has to be bold.
Taking down President Trump becomes less likely with each day that goes by.
But Mueller just beefed up his plan to destroy Trump after making a bold move.
With his investigation well into its second year, Special Counsel Robert Mueller seems to be gridlocked. He has moved away from trying to prosecute Trump officials for collusion with Russia, and has instead begun targeting them for unrelated crimes.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly called the investigation a witch hunt, and these actions make it hard for that to be denied. But despite Trump’s assertions, the anti-Trump left still look to Mueller as their savior, and only hope to bring down the president.
It is for that reason that Mueller really has to pick up his investigation, and find something to show that the past year of his life uncovered something. That is why he just tapped additional Justice Department prosecutors to help in his investigation.
Robert Mueller has a team of 17 federal prosecutors, but has largely been relying on Department of Justice units in his investigation.
The most recent statement of expenditure shows that while Mueller’s team spent $7.7 million since the investigations start in May of 2017, DOJ units have spent $9 million in the same period supporting the investigation.
This is largely due to the fact that Mueller has faced heavy scrutiny, and likely would not be able to acquire additional funding to increase the size of his own team. The DOJ units are used to supplement the work of Mueller’s team instead of finding additional funding to grow his team.
The reason that the prospect of his team growing is unlikely is the fact that his investigation has been so slow moving.
He has not uncovered any real evidence connecting Trump or his campaign team to Russia collusion, so he is targeting officials for unrelated crimes, likely so he can gain a better chance at questioning them directly.
The last “smoking gun” that Mueller uncovered was the Trump tower meeting between Donald Trump Jr., campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and a Russian lawyer.
But even that turned out to be nothing, and the fact that Mueller has not even once spoken to the Russian lawyer in question proves that.
Tapping more federal prosecutors appears to be Mueller’s last ditch plan to find some form of dirt on President Trump. That is what this investigation has been about since the start after-all.
But even with the extra staff, Mueller likely will not find anything to harm President Trump. Trump has asserted his innocence since day one of the investigation, and even welcomed an investigation at the start.
His welcoming of the investigation was before it was clear that its goal was never to find the truth, but rather to harm him.
With the investigation still running so close to the upcoming midterm elections, it seems more likely every day that the goal isn’t just to hurt Trump, but any republican close to him.
Trump is aware of this, and his attorney, Rudy Giuliani has fired back at Mueller for this. Giuliani made it clear to Mueller that if he keeps the investigation running into the midterm elections that he runs the risk of being investigated for election interference.
If it turns out that the investigation is bogus, but it is still used to harm republicans in the election, it makes sense that many would consider that election interference.
Do you think Robert Mueller’s investigation is nothing more than witch hunt?
