Nancy Pelosi is off to a horrible start as Speaker of the House
And things just got ten times worse.
Pelosi just dropped a bombshell about impeaching Trump.
Nancy Pelosi has had perhaps the worst first two months of any Speaker of the House in history.
After sweeping into power on a so-called “Blue Wave” last year, Pelosi was riding high.
She and the Democratic Party were excited to enact a tsunami of liberal legislation and pave the way for Democrats retaking the Senate and White House in 2020.
But one of the key issues many new Democrats were pushing for was impeachment of President Trump.
In fact, the Democratic Party had numerous new freshmen elected in 2018 who had an almost singular obsession with removing Trump from office.
And those dreams from the far-left have now been dashed, perhaps forever.
MSN reports, “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in an interview that she opposes moving to impeach President Trump even though she believes he is “unfit” for office — her first definitive statement on the subject and one that stands to alienate members of her own Democratic Party who are intent on ousting the president.”
This move puts her squarely at odds with many in her own party, who are demanding the President’s impeachment.
The fact that Pelosi is now considered one of the most moderate members of her party also helps to illustrate how far to the left the Democratic Party has moved over the past few decades.
But Pelosi wasn’t done alienating her party rank and file yet.
“I’m not for impeachment,” Pelosi said on March 6th.
She had been asked by a reporter from the Washington Post about the push to impeach the President from within her own caucus, and Pelosi almost completely shot it down in just a few sentences.
“This is news,” she added. “I haven’t said this to any press person before. But since you asked, and I’ve been thinking about this, impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.”
Pelosi did throw out some red meat to her liberal base by stating that she thought Trump was unfit to serve as President, but those words will surely ring hollow to left-wing activists within the Democratic Party who seek nothing less than the removal of Trump from office.
Pelosi is caught between a rock and a hard place.
She knows that there’s no grounds to impeach the President.
But at the same time, she knows that her base will demand nothing less.
If she chooses to impeach Trump, not only will her efforts fail, but Democrats would be punished for it in 2020 like nothing before.
But if she doesn’t move to impeach Trump, the Democratic Party may splinter.
Do you think Democrats would make a mistake by trying to impeach Trump?
