There is one big threat to the Democrats losing their House majority in the 2020 election.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has taken every action in her power to put out this fire.
That’s when Nancy Pelosi found out one fact that left her shaking her head in rage.
On Monday, New York Congressman José Serrano became the 111th Democrat to come out in favor of impeachment.
That followed Democrats Congressman Denny Heck, Kim Schrier, Suzan DelBene and Derek Kilmer announcing their support for impeachment over the weekend.
That means more than half the Democrats in the House now favor impeachment.
These five Democrats came out in favor of removing the President from office despite the fact that special counsel Robert Mueller imploded as a witness during his testimony.
Mueller demonstrated diminished mental capacity and made it clear the Democrat activists on Mueller’s staff were conducting a partisan witch hunt.
That was music to the ears of House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler.
Nadler supports impeaching the President, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi slammed the brakes on his effort because Pelosi knows impeachment is a political disaster.
During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Judiciary Committee Chairman Nadler left the door wide open to launching an impeachment inquiry.
“We have impeachment resolutions before the committee. We are conducting investigations to determine whether we should report those impeachment resolutions to the House or whether we should draft our own and report them to the House,” Nadler told ABC.
“We’re considering those resolutions. We’ll make a determination after we get more evidence as to the president’s crimes that we had from the Mueller report and also from other things, violations of the emoluments clause, his failure to defend the constitution against repeated Russian attacks,” Congressman Nadler continued. “We’re investigating whether to approve articles of Impeachment before the Committee.”
Nadler knows a critical mass is building in favor of impeachment.
Congress took off for a six-week August recess where Democrats’ constituents will deliver an ear full about how much they hate Donald Trump and how badly they want to see Congress impeach the President.
Pelosi pumped the brakes on impeachment after Mueller’s testimony, telling a group of reporters that “We will proceed when we have what we need to proceed — not one day sooner.”
Polls have shown two realities Pelosi clearly recognizes.
First, the public remains opposed to impeachment.
Second, Mueller’s testimony did not change any minds.
So if Democrats press forward with impeachment they will walk into a political buzz saw in 2020.
But Democrats do not seem to be concerned with that reality.
What Democrats in Congress want to do is ward off a primary challenger from the left by getting on the same side of this issue as their base.
This may be a smart strategy in the short term.
But the more Democrats that come out in favor of impeachment, the greater the pressure will build on Nancy Pelosi to travel down the politically disastrous path of impeachment.
Black Eye Politics will continue to cover any new developments in the Democrats’ push to impeach President Trump.
