Nancy Pelosi just waved the white flag of surrender.
The Speaker of the House spent weeks trying to rig a Senate impeachment trial.
But Nancy Pelosi got brought down by this Republican who is every Democrats’ top enemy.
House Speaker Pelosi withheld articles of impeachment for three weeks in hopes of pressuring Senate Republicans into allowing Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to call the shots in a Senate impeachment trial.
Pelosi refused to transmit the articles of impeachment – which delayed a Senate trial – to blackmail Republicans into allowing Democrats to call a procession of witnesses the House of Representatives was unwilling to wait for legal battles over their testimony to play out.
The fake news media tried to play this up as if it was a standoff between two parties with equal leverage.
Nothing could have been further from the truth.
That narrative persisted because fake news reporters are Pelosi’s ideological fellow travelers and feel obligated to act as her press agents.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell sneered at Pelosi’s pathetic attempt at a power play.
McConnell’s response boiled down to “you will get nothing and like it.”
“There will be no haggling with the House over Senate procedure. We will not cede our authority to try this impeachment. The House Democrats’ turn is over. The Senate has made its decision. This is for the Senate, and the Senate only, to decide,” McConnell wrote.
Since Republicans never wanted to deal with impeachment in the first place, Pelosi’s scheme to withhold the articles of impeachment was no threat at all.
There was only one logical conclusion to this skirmish and it finally arrived when Pelosi sent a letter to her caucus announcing her surrender.
“I have asked Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler to be prepared to bring to the Floor next week a resolution to appoint managers and transmit articles of impeachment to the Senate,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi tried to save face by claiming Republicans showed their hand to structure a trial designed to acquit Donald Trump.
Pelosi wrote that “By joining a resolution to dismiss, Sen. McConnell showed his true colors. Americans have now seen what is at stake in a fair trial with witnesses & evidence, and new evidence has emerged. Every Senator will have to vote: is their loyalty is to the President or the Constitution?”
At the end of the day, Republicans did not commit to calling witnesses and didn’t even present Democrats with the proposed rules for a Senate impeachment trial.
There was no other objective way to analyze the situation other than to declare it a massive defeat on every level for House Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats.
A Senate trial will start this week and if Republicans stick to their timeline, Donald Trump will stand in front of Nancy Pelosi on the Floor of the House of Representatives on February 4 and spike the football by delivering the State of the Union Address as an exonerated President.
