Donald Trump and the Republicans may be walking into a buzz saw.
Democrats have been plotting for years to launch a strike aimed at the heart of the Republican Party’s power.
And Nancy Pelosi is sitting on one secret weapon that spells doom for the GOP.
In 2010, the Tea Party wave did more than sweep Republicans into control of the House of Representatives.
Republicans won control of the majority of state legislatures and governors’ mansions which in turn gave the GOP control over the drawing of congressional and state legislative maps for the next decade.
With the census scheduled for 2020, that control is up for grabs in this fall’s election.
And the Democrats have their sights set on state House races in North Carolina, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Georgia, and Texas.
POLITICO reported that, “From Pennsylvania to Texas to Minnesota, cash-flush Democrats are working to win back legislative chambers needed to take control of drawing congressional maps — or at least guarantee a seat at the table. If they succeed, it would correct an Obama-era down-ballot shellacking that handed Republicans House control and resulted in the loss of more than 900 Democratic legislative seats.”
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee consultant Simon Rosenberg told POLITICO that 2020 was a time for Democrats to go big and push for a landslide victory that would wipe out the GOP by winning formerly red states like Texas and Georgia.
“The rationale for going big is clear: it can help flip the Senate, create a more powerful mandate for governing, and lock in wins for the coming reapportionment,” Rosenberg explained. “From a governing and party perspective, there will be a powerful case for going big, and trying to get to 400-plus Electoral College votes.”
Democrats have been laying the groundwork for this moment for years.
Barack Obama and former Attorney General Eric Holder formed the National Democratic Redistricting Committee to focus on state House races and drawing maps that would lock the Democrats into legislative maps that would make it impossible for the GOP to win majorities in Congress and in state Houses across the country for the entire decade of the 2020s.
Many Republicans – rightly – fear that if the Democrats win the president and the Senate in 2020, they will eliminate the legislative filibuster, add four new Democrat senators by granting Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico statehood and pack the Supreme Court with up to six new liberal justices.
And while all of that is a serious threat, it does not represent the extent to which the Democrat Party will grab power and put in place measures that will make it impossible for the Republican Party to win elections.
The Democrats will go for broke if they win control of state Houses and draw maps that lock the GOP out of power for at least a decade.
