Democrat California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Sunday evening he’s appointing EMILY’s List president Laphonza Butler to serve the remaining term of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) who died last Thursday.
However, the appointment of Butler is raising concerns due to the fact she’s allegedly a resident of the state of Maryland.
“FEC filings from EMILY’s List record Laphonza Butler’s residence as Silver Springs, Maryland as recently as 31 days ago,” said FEC analyst Rob Pyers. “FPPC and FEC filings indicate that soon-to-be California Senator Laphonza Butler hasn’t been a resident of the state for over two years.”
Pyers noted that EMILY’s List changed their website to hide where Butler allegedly lives.
On Sunday night, Butler’s biography on the EMILY’s List website said, “Laphonza grew up in Magnolia, MS, and attended one of the country’s premier HBCUs, Jackson State University. She lives in Maryland with her partner Neneki Lee and their daughter Nylah.”
However, by the next day, the far-left activist organization had removed the line that she lived in Maryland.
Butler’s X account also had Maryland listed as her place of residence prior to Newsom announcing he was appointing her to fill the Senate seat.
“Butler is a longtime California resident and homeowner. She moved to the DC area when she became president of Emily’s List. Butler has already re-registered [to vote] in California,” a spokesperson for Newsom’s office told The Post Monday.
Newsom was widely mocked for the choice he made.
Rep. Darrell Issa, (R-Calif) questioned whether it’s constitutional for Butler to take office in California while residing in a different state.
“We’re not talking about the question of majority, we’re talking about 38 million Californians who have an absolute right to have somebody who puts California first – not who puts the District of Columbia first or Maryland, where she’s a resident, first,” Issa told Fox News Digital in an interview on Monday.
“It’s not that he couldn’t find somebody,” he continued. “Instead, [Newsom] chose the most progressive African American woman he could find, seemingly for political purposes.”
Butler thanked Newsom for the appointment in a statement on Monday.
“I am honored to accept Gov. Newsom’s nomination to be a U.S. Senator for a state I have long called home,” she said.
