With the next Presidential election just around the corner, all eyes are converging on 2020.
But President Donald Trump already has Democrats scrambling for an election that is still over a year away.
And that’s because one new poll shows this major swing state is already set to re-elect Trump.
Donald Trump became President of the United States after defeating Hillary Clinton in a stunning upset for the ages in the 2016 election.
And he wouldn’t have been able to pull it off were it not for his strength in the critical midwestern swing states that had eluded Republican candidates for decades.
But Trump managed to win nearly all of them, flipping traditionally blue swing states like Michigan and Pennsylvania while also carrying major swing states like Ohio and Iowa that had been considered major battlegrounds long before Trump came along.
In the end, Trump’s strength in the Midwest was too much for Democrats to counter and he ended up smashing the “Blue Wall” which had elected Democrats to office for decades.
But after the dust settled, it became clear that Trump had rewritten the rules in many states.
And one of them was Ohio.
A state which had always been one of the most fiercely fought swing states in the country alongside Florida, Ohio was once considered the ultimate prize in presidential elections.
To win Ohio meant to win the Presidency itself.
And while that argument held true in 2016, Ohio ended up voting roughly 10-points more Republican than the country as a whole did.
Which means Trump won the state by over 8-points, making it a massive landslide that hadn’t been seen in the swing state in decades.
That served as the first sign that Ohio was beginning to move to the right in federal elections, and that Republicans would have an easier time holding the critical state in the 2020 election.
And after the 2018 elections which saw Republicans hold their congressional majority in Ohio as well as the Governor’s office, it became clear that the once-key swing state was now beginning to tilt towards the GOP.
Trump’s campaign would be well-served by starting off the 2020 races with Ohio already in his column.
And now, a new poll shows that very well may be the case.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports, ”Of all the top Democratic presidential candidates, only Biden beat President Donald Trump head-to-head in Ohio in a poll released by Quinnipiac University on Thursday morning.”
This is bad news for Democrats because Biden is increasingly looking like he may not emerge as the party’s presidential nominee.
And everyone else in the field trails Trump in Ohio.
“Trump is in a dead heat with the five other leading Democratic contenders, U.S. Sens. Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg,” adds the Enquirer.
Unless the Democrats can regain ground in a state that should be considered a key swing state in 2020, Ohio may soon lose its status as a swing state and continue to move in the Republican column.
Do you think Trump can carry Ohio in 2020?
