If Obama had his way, he would have obliterated the Second Amendment while in office.
The only thing that stood in his way was millions of gun-owning Americans.
But even after leaving office he isn’t giving up, and he just announced a new push for gun control.
Former President Barack Obama made gun control a major priority during his time in office. But despite his determined demands, he never was actually successful in passing any real gun control.
There were times he got close, especially after the horrific 2012 school shooting in Connecticut that left 27 people dead. A gun control measure pushed by anti-gun Democrats and Republicans nearly passed in 2013, but came just a handful of votes short in the U.S. Senate.
This angered Obama deeply, and he named it as one of the biggest frustrations during his eight years in office. Because of that, Obama has chosen not to sit on the sidelines during the debate for gun control, and has tweeted his recommitted call for gun control.
This National Gun Violence Awareness Day, show your commitment to keeping our kids safe from gun violence. Then, for everyone we’ve lost, take action to change our leadership and our laws until they reflect that commitment – no matter how long it takes. https://t.co/lraIwlQAgl

“National Gun Violence Awareness Day” is a faux-holiday promoted by Everytown for Gun Safety. The anti-gun group is funded largely by billionaire former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The group’s stated goal is to pass gun control measures at every level of government possible.
Obama’s support for the group is troubling to Second Amendment supporters. The election of President Donald Trump shows that the American people are tired of Obama’s policies. Obama is attempting to use his power and influence to usurp the will of the people by promoting measures they don’t approve of.
Gun control attempts during Trump’s presidency have been attempted, but have all fallen short.
The loudest calls for gun control began after the Parkland, Florida school shooting. A number of students in the school made media headlines by calling for gun control in the immediate wake of the shooting. Those students later went on to host an anti-gun march in Washington, D.C. that was attended by hundreds of thousands of people.
Despite those students, who were propped up by the media, being loud, they haven’t been able to accomplish anything at the federal level.
That is because the Trump presidency is strongly pro-gun. While running for office, Donald Trump made his opposition to gun control clear, and has stood by that during his time in office.
That is in clear contrast to the administration of former President Barack Obama. Obama was strongly in favor of gun control.
But the truth is – none of the gun control measures promoted by Obama would have stopped recent shootings. The one similarity between virtually all of the high-profile shootings in recent years is that they occurred in gun free zones. In fact, numbers compiled by the Crime Prevention Research Center show that 98% of mass shootings between 1950 and 2016 occurred in gun free zones.
Gun free zones have made it impossible for shooting victims to defend themselves against mass killers. The numbers make it clear the only thing that could stop mass shooters is would-be victims that can shoot back, not gun control.
