Hunter Biden thought he’d stymied the Republicans efforts to uncover his scandalous business deals.
However his tactics have backfired in a major way.
Hunter Biden completely panicked when he heard this offer from House Republicans.
After Hunter Biden refused to comply with subpoenas for his father’s impeachment inquiry, in response, House Republicans offered to accommodate Hunter Biden with another subpoena.
Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) wrote a letter to Hunter’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, on Sunday explaining that the committees “welcome Mr. Biden’s newfound willingness to testify in a deposition setting under subpoena.”
“Although the Committee’s subpoenas are lawful and remain legally enforceable, as an accommodation to Mr. Biden and at your request, we are prepared to issue subpoenas compelling Mr. Biden’s appearance at a deposition on a new date in the coming weeks,” they wrote.
Both the Oversight Committee and Judiciary Committee voted last week to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for choosing not to comply with the subpoenas issued in November.
Lowell sent a letter to chairmen on Friday prior stating Hunter would be willing to appear for a deposition or hearing in compliance with a “proper subpoena.”
“If you issue a new proper subpoena, now that there is a duly authorized impeachment inquiry, Mr. Biden will comply for a hearing or deposition. We will accept such a subpoena on Mr. Biden’s behalf,” Lowell wrote.
Hunter Biden has demanded he only answer questions from lawmakers in a public hearing.
When he was supposed to appear for a closed-door deposition last month, Hunter delivered his remarks to the press outside the Capital Building without taking questions.
House Republicans said they’re willing to have Hunter Biden testify at a public hearing, if he’s willing to make a deposition first.
“To be clear, the issuance of these subpoenas does not in any way suggest or imply that the Committees believe the assertions in your January 12 letter to have any merit,” Comer and Jordan wrote in the Sunday letter. “Our willingness to issue these subpoenas is rooted entirely in our interest in obtaining Mr. Biden’s testimony as expeditiously as possible.”
Comer and Jordan also rejected Lowell’s proposal of “hybrid process.”
“While we welcome Mr. Biden’s public testimony at the appropriate time, he must appear for a deposition that conforms to the House Rules and the rules and practices of the Committees, just like every other witness before the Committees,” they wrote.
