The Democrats saw a lot of new faces in 2018.
And one of them has been hailed as a major rising star in the party.
But this crime could end their career forever.
Last year, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams was nearly elected Governor of Georgia.
After coming up short, Abrams has remained in the spotlight, going so far as to give the Democratic response to President Trump’s State of the Union address this month.
Abrams is ambitious as well. She has already publicly stated that she will be running for office again.
However, those plans may never come to fruition.
Abrams is about to fall into serious legal trouble after this crime broke headlines.
The Daily Caller reports, “A nonprofit founded by Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams was slapped with three different tax liens over the past year, bringing the organization’s known total to seven.”
Abrams is the founder of “Third Sector Development” a non-profit group dedicated to registering African American voters.
The only problem is, the group isn’t really non-partisan. Their mission is simply to get more Democrats on the voter rolls.
Even worse, Third Sector Development hasn’t even been properly paying its taxes over the years.
Three separate tax liens were levied on the group in just the past year for failing to pay Georgia’s unemployment tax.
These tax liens are reported by Atlanta newspapers to be roughly 3,500 dollars.
The problem, however, is even worse than that.
“This isn’t the first time state regulators have targeted Abrams’ organization. The Georgia Department of Labor issued four tax liens worth $13,000 against Third Sector Development between 2014 and 2016, also citing unpaid employment contributions,” reports the Daily Caller.
Abrams has dismissed the controversy, however.
“In spite of timely payments to Georgia, Third Sector Development is awaiting final action from the Department of Labor to fully resolve this matter,” said Caitlin Highland, an Abrams spokeswoman.
“Last year, Third Sector took steps immediately to satisfy liens imposed for unemployment insurance paid to the federal rather than state government, due entirely to third party contractor error. Unfortunately, the process has taken several months and remains unresolved,” Highland continued.
The problem with Third Sector Development goes even further than tax evasion however.
The nonprofit has paid Abrams an enormous amount of money over the years.
Third Sector Development, and another group founded by Abrams, the Voter Access Institute, have paid her nearly half a million dollars over just three years.
The donations both groups have raised during that time have numbered over 12 million dollars as well.
Abrams does not like to talk about the donations she receives though.
The news could complicate Abram’s future political career heavily, as she is currently considered one of the top rising stars within the Democratic Party.
Many Democrats are pushing for her to run for US Senate in 2020, or even Governor again in 2022.
Do you think the tax scandal could hurt Abram’s future plans for higher office?
