Special counsel Robert Mueller’s rigged witch hunt against President Trump has entered a dangerous new phase.
Mueller is squeezing Trump associates with threats of spending the rest of their life behind prison in order to induce them to flip on the President.
But Mueller’s plan collapsed with just one word.
Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort faces 18 counts of various financial crimes including conspiracy, money laundering and making false statements in two trials in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Mueller’s case in Virginia began on Tuesday and some pundits speculated Manafort would cut a deal and begin to cooperate with Mueller before the trial began.
When Trump lawyer Michael Cohen claimed Donald Trump knew in advance of the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer and Donald Trump Jr., speculation immediately centered on if Manafort would confirm Cohen’s account.
Trump haters suspected Manafort would be the most likely suspect to confirm Cohen’s account since Manafort is the only other Trump associate who attended the meeting with the Russians who is facing legal jeopardy.
Other pundits speculated that since Manafort worked with a Russian connected political party in Ukraine, he could be the key witness to spill the beans on any collusion with the Kremlin during the election.
These fever dreams of anti-Trump journalists collapsed when a CBS reporter confronted Manafort’s attorney.
Paul Reid of CBS tweeted out her exclusive scoop that Manafort’s lawyer Kevin Downing confirmed Manafort would not cooperate with Mueller:
JUST IN: No deal. Manafort attorney Kevin Downing tells me “No chance!” his client will cooperate with Special Counsel in order to avoid trial today. @CBSNews
Cohen’s word that Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting with Russians promising “dirt” on Hillary Clinton is probably not enough to doom Trump.
The former Trump Organization fixer previously testified to the Senate that Trump had no knowledge of the meeting.
And after Donald Trump Jr’s testimony about the meeting – where he denied Donald Trump knew anything about the gathering at Trump Tower – Cohen praised Trump Jr’s honesty and transparency.
Given Cohen’s shifting story, it is impossible to assign him any credibility in this matter.
So Mueller needs a corroborating witness.
If Manafort were to back up Cohen’s story it would put Donald Trump Jr. at risk of Mueller charging him with perjury.
Mueller attacking Trump’s family to get to the President would lead to an escalation of hostilities with President Trump that would likely end in either a pre-emptive pardon or Mueller’s firing.
But Manafort is refusing to cooperate with the special counsel.
There can only be three explanations as to why.
First, he doesn’t have anything of value to offer.
Manafort was only associated with the Trump campaign for four months and wasn’t privy to any access about Trump’s dealings.
Second, many believe Manafort is being unfairly targeted by a politically motivated prosecutor and the former Trump campaign chairman is determined to prove his innocence.
And finally, there was no Russian collusion and Manafort refuses to provide false testimony about the President in order to save his own neck.
