Democrats’ chances to win back control of the United States Senate took a severe hit.
An ugly sex scandal consumed the Democrats in a pivotal race.
And now this Democrat has one big worry about more women coming forward alleging affairs.
Cal Cunningham was leading North Carolina Republican Thom Tillis in the polls and substantially outraising the incumbent.
The North Carolina Senate race looked like a prime pickup opportunity for the Democrats and would be the seat that allowed Chuck Schumer to replace Mitch McConnell as Senate Majority Leader.
But now the race is in chaos.
The National File published a bombshell exclusive alleging that Cunningham “sexted” with medical marijuana lobbyist Arlene Guzman Todd.
Subsequent text messages from Guzman Todd appeared to confirm that the two carried on an extramarital affair.
Cunningham – who is a Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserves and had been running his campaign on the themes of duty and integrity – went into hiding for days.
Finally, Cunningham emerged to take questions from the press and it turned into a disaster because on multiple occasions Cunningham refused to say if more women would step forward and claim they had affairs with Cunningham.
Cunningham’s inability to answer that question kept the scandal alive because Cunningham’s evasiveness led some observers to believe that Cunningham was trying to hide more affairs.
If Cunningham loses this race, it complicates Democrats’ efforts to win back the Senate and could keep Republicans in the majority.
