Some Republicans spent four years pretending to be Donald Trump’s allies.
But they were really just biding their time.
And this Republican’s 11th hour impeachment betrayal left Donald Trump speechless.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley built her national profile on smearing Republican voters as racists.
But after Trump won the election, Trump named Haley as his Ambassador to the United Nations where Haley spent two years wiggling her way into Trump’s good graces.
Critics contend the entire time Haley served in the Trump administration she was plotting a 2024 presidential campaign that would be premised on returning the GOP to the days of Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush while exiling Donald Trump and his supporters from the party.
Trump supporters felt their worst fears come true when POLITICO’s left-wing activist Tim Alberta published a piece based on the seven hours he spent interviewing Haley in the final weeks of the Trump presidency.
In the interview, Nikki Haley fully denounced Donald Trump and planted her flag in the camp of Never Trumpers like Mitt Romney, Liz Cheney, Ben Sasse, and Adam Kinzinger claiming President Trump’s conduct after the election disqualified him from ever leading the Republican Party again.
“He’s not going to run for federal office again,” Haley said.
But what if he does? Or at least, what if he spends the next four years threatening to? Can the Republican Party heal with Trump in the picture?
“I don’t think he’s going to be in the picture,” she said, matter-of-factly. “I don’t think he can. He’s fallen so far.”
This was the most certainty I’d heard from any Republican in the aftermath of January 6. And Haley wasn’t done.
“We need to acknowledge he let us down,” she said. “He went down a path he shouldn’t have, and we shouldn’t have followed him, and we shouldn’t have listened to him. And we can’t let that ever happen again.”
One theme in Alberta’s piece is that Nikki Haley has no real core conservative convictions.
Haley’s lack of principle shined through in an anecdote Alberta recounted how when Haley and her team were desperate to stop Donald Trump in 2016, she hosted Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio for dinner in an audition to earn her endorsement before the South Carolina primary.
Alberta wrote that Haley and her team erupted in howls of laughter after Cruz relayed his sincere desire as following through on his promise to repeal Obamacare.
“Over a painfully long dinner, the Texas senator recited line after line from his stump speech. When she asked Cruz, near the end of the dinner, what he would want his legacy to be as president, he responded, ‘I want to be remembered as the president who repealed every word of Obamacare.’ When the senator left, Haley and her staff burst into laughter,” Alberta wrote.
Nikki Haley is attempting to clear the field in the establishment lane in the 2024 Republican Primary.
Haley wants the party elites and big money donors to know that despite serving in the Trump administration, her loyalties lie with the Mitt Romney/Liz Cheney GOP establishment.
