An important Democrat was charged with being scandalously corrupt.
The allegations against him are absolutely damning.
A top Democrat was indicted on federal criminal charges in a stunning development.
New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez was charged on Friday on federal corruption charges. He’s facing allegations that he received large sums of cash and gold bribes in exchange for unethical actions, including providing sensitive information to the government of Egypt.
Menendez, who serves as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, allegedly used his position of influence to benefit the government of Egypt as well as Hana, an Egyptian-American businessman with close ties to Egyptian government officials, and two other New Jersey businessmen.
Attorney Damian Williams said during a press conference Friday that Menendez used his power “to benefit the government of Egypt in various ways,” including by providing nonpublic U.S. government information to Egypt and otherwise taking steps “to secretly aid” the Egyptian government.
Williams also hinted that further charges may be brought against Menendez.
“This investigation is very much ongoing. We are not done,” Williams added.
Menendez accepted “cash, gold, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury vehicle, and other things of value,” according to the indictment.
“Over $480,000 in cash — much of it stuffed into envelopes and hidden in clothing, closets, and a safe — was discovered in the home,” the indictment said. It included pictures of the results of federal agents’ search of the Menendezes’ home in New Jersey in June 2022. The photographs showed gold bars and hundred-dollar bills that had been stuffed in clothing.
Menendez claimed in response that he was the victim of a vast conspiracy on Friday.
“For years, forces behind the scenes have repeatedly attempted to silence my voice and dig my political grave,” said the 69-year-old senator. “Since this investigation was leaked nearly a year ago, there has been an active smear campaign of anonymous sources and innuendos to create an air of impropriety where none exists.”
“The excesses of these prosecutors is apparent. They have misrepresented the normal work of a Congressional office,” he claimed. “Those behind this campaign simply cannot accept that a first-generation Latino American from humble beginnings could rise to be a U.S. Senator and serve with honor and distinction. Even worse, they see me as an obstacle in the way of their broader political goals.”
Menendez claimed that he had been “falsely accused before” by prosecutors and encouraged people to “reserve judgement” in this case because when the facts are presented “my fellow New Jerseyans will see this for what it is.”
