Ron DeSantis’s run for president has been faced with a number of setbacks.
And he just received another piece of bad news.
This top Democrat gave Ron DeSantis a harsh dose of reality.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis debated against California Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday night in Georgia on Fox News.
The debate, moderated by Fox News’ Sean Hannity, was designed to showcase which state America should be like more – California or Florida.
DeSantis thrashed Newsom on the substance of the issues, pointing out that imposing a version of the Green New Deal on his state’s economy and inserting woke ideology in the classrooms led to residents fleeing California.
All Newsom could do in response was unleash a torrent of predictable falsehoods and crack a joke about the state of the 2024 polls.
“I’ll tell you why I’m here. I’m here to tell the truth about the Biden-Harris record and also compare and contrast Ron DeSantis’ record and the Republican Party’s record as a point of contrast that’s as different as daylight and darkness,” Newsom said.
“You want to bring us back to a pre-1960s world,” he added.
“America in reverse. You want to roll back hard-earned national rights, on voting rights, on civil rights, on LGBTQ rights, on women’s rights, not just access to abortion, but also access to contraception. You want to weaponize grievance. You are focusing on false separateness. You, in particular, Ron, are on a banning binge, a cultural purge, intimidating and humiliating people you disagree with. You and President Trump are really trying to light democracy on fire.”
“So Sean, there are profound differences tonight, and I look forward to engaging them, but there’s one thing, in closing, that we have in common, is neither of us will be the nominee for our party in 2024,” Newsom concluded.
Newsom has been rumored to be running a “shadow campaign” for the presidency.
At one point during the debate, Newsome was called out by Hannity.
“The Biden administration over the last three years —,” Newsom began to say when Hannity interjected.
“Is Joe Biden paying you tonight,” Hannity asked the California governor. “I thought this was state vs. state?”
“But it’s about the United States of America, I thought this guy was running for president of the United States. If you’re running for —” Newsom responded, referring to DeSantis.
“You are too [running for president], you just won’t admit it — you won’t admit it. You will not admit it. Why don’t you just admit that you’re running?” pressed DeSantis.
So far, no one in the modern era has had such commanding a lead going into the presidential primary as former President Donald Trump.
Trump has the support of a record-breaking 62% of Republican primary voters according to a Fox News survey in November.
DeSantis is the second choice among surveyed voters, however, there’s almost a 50-point gap with DeSantis having 14% of primary voter support.
