Donald Trump looks like he is gearing up for a re-election campaign.
But Trump may end up running into an insurmountable obstacle.
And Donald Trump got some bad news about how Democrats will stop him from running in 2024.
On CNN, host and lawyer Michael Smerconish laid out how Democrats plan to bleed Trump dry and destroy his political standing with a series of politically motivated investigations.
Host Wolf Blitzer asked Smerconish about reports that National Archives asked the Justice Department to investigate Trump taking 15 boxes of records to Mar-a-Lago that contained classified information.
Smerconish admitted the case was weak as the government would have to prove Trump intentionally mishandled classified information to charge and convict him of a crime.
“Did he intentionally mishandle those documents, or was he grossly negligent? That’s the legal issue. I don’t know. I suspect his defense is going to be. This is the way I treated all of my possessions, government and otherwise. Whether the toilet story is accurate, the shredding of documents, the use of cellphones, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera,” Smerconish stated.
Smerconish then added that the January 6 witch hunt committee and Democrat prosecutors in Atlanta, New York City and New York State all launched investigations into Trump that Smerconish theorized would all be very expensive for Trump to defend himself against.
“Wolf, for anybody else, this is a five-alarm fire. For him, I think it’s the least of his worries. He’s got the Manhattan District Attorney. He’s got the New York Attorney General, the January 6th commission, and a grand jury in Georgia all looking at him. If he were a major corporation — and he isn’t in reality — there’d be in-house teams of lawyers and a lot of outside counsel. In his case, this has got to be incredibly expensive and difficult to manage. It’s like a death by a thousand cuts, legally speaking,” Smerconish added.
The January 6 witch hunt committee only exists to try and disqualify Trump from running for president by recommending Joe Biden’s Justice Department prosecute and jail Trump.
Prosecutors in Atlanta are investigating Trump over claims Trump tried to intimidate the Georgia secretary of state into finding enough votes to hand Trump Georgia’s Electoral College votes.
The New York State attorney general and the Manhattan district attorney launched criminal and civil investigations into allegations Trump inflated or deflated the values of his real estate assets to secure favorable bank loans.
Even if these witch hunts result – and the Manhattan DA and New York State attorney general both campaign on charging Trump – in no charges, Democrats hope they will hang over Trump heading into the 2024 campaign and force Trump not to seek the presidency.
