President Trump has a clear path to winning re-election.
But he’s about to make one mistake that could throw it all away.
And now, Trump just got one warning about the biggest mistake he could make before 2020.
President Donald Trump was elected over Hillary Clinton in 2016 in part on a campaign promise to defend and uphold the Second Amendment.
While Clinton and her team were busy attacking Americans’ constitutional rights, Trump was promising to protect them.
And he defeated them because millions of gun owners across America came out on election day to vote for him.
But now, in the wake of a twin shooting in Ohio and Texas earlier this month, the President may be leaning towards signing a law which could crush his support among Second Amendment advocates across America just months before the 2020 election kicks into full-swing.
Greenwich Time reports, “President Donald Trump has repeatedly told lawmakers and aides in private conversations that he is open to endorsing extensive background checks in the wake of two mass shootings, prompting a warning from the National Rifle Association and concerns among White House aides, according to lawmakers and administration officials.”
If the President were to sign a Democrat-backed “Red Flag” law to take away Americans’ Fourth and Second Amendment rights, he could end up ruining his own re-election chances before a single ballot is even cast.
And that’s because the President’s own base is adamantly against any infringements against Americans’ rights to keep and bear arms.
It’s why they elected Trump over Hillary Clinton in the first place.
And if the President is fooled into supporting a massive gun control package, it could prove to be disastrous for his 2020 plans.
“NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre spoke with Trump on Tuesday after the president expressed support for a background check bill and told him it would not be popular among Trump’s supporters, according to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss internal talks. LaPierre also argued against the bill’s merits, the officials said.”
Democrats know all of this too.
They want to get a gun control bill in front of the President in the hopes that he will sign it.
It would give them a huge policy victory while dividing the Republican base at the same time, allowing them to have a far easier time defeating Trump next year and then pushing through even more radical gun control packages in the future.
All they have to do right now is get just a handful of Republicans to flip in the US Senate and back the measure before they can send something to the President’s desk.
And if they manage to pull it off, it could spell disaster for Trump.
“I don’t think the president or his Republican allies are going to become out of nowhere advocates of aggressive gun control,” said Matt Schlapp, the head of the American Conservative Union.
Do you think the President should reject Democrat-backed gun control laws?
