Robert Mueller’s testimony before the House and Senate couldn’t go worse for him.
But his troubles are far from over.
And Trump just revealed one fact that could put Mueller behind bars.
In Mueller’s first testimony before Congress, he truly made a fool of himself.
He was scatterbrained, and often times couldn’t remember pertinent facts about the report that he himself compiled.
At one point he even claimed he didn’t know what Fusion GPS is.
Fusion GPS is the Democrat opposition research firm that hired former British spy Christopher Steele to compile the infamous Russia dossier.
That dossier was later used to obtain FISA surveillance warrants against Trump campaign officials.
And those FISA surveillance warrants were subsequently used to form Mueller’s special counsel.
So in short, without Fusion GPS, there is no special counsel investigation.
But while that statement was more a dumb moment for him, there was at least one other moment where he said something that could put him in hot water.
As Trump exposed in a tweet, when Mueller claims that he did not apply and interview for the job of FBI Director, he could be committing perjury.
After being asked about if he applied for the job of FBI Director, Mueller claims that he did not, and that a meeting he held with President Trump about the job was not actually an interview.
“I was not applying for that job. I was asked to give my input on what it would take to do the job,” Mueller said.
But Trump has a different recollection of the incident, as he explains in a tweet.
“It has been reported that Robert Mueller is saying that he did not apply and interview for the job of FBI Director (and get turned down) the day before he was wrongfully appointed Special Counsel. Hope he doesn’t say that under oath in that we have numerous witnesses to the interview, including the Vice President of the United States!”
So Trump claims that Mueller did in fact apply and interview for the job before being turned down.
That fact must be extremely embarrassing for Mueller.
But lying while under oath is a crime.
So if what President Trump is saying is true, Mueller could be in a lot of trouble.
If it was a Trump ally in the same situation, there is a high likelihood they would be under investigation already.
After all, most of Trump’s officials who have ended up under criminal investigation have only gotten there due to mistruths.
And in those cases, like with Michael Flynn, the lies aren’t even serious and are simply honest mistakes.
In the case of Mueller, if Trump is telling the truth, it will be a clear case of him willfully lying.
But because Mueller is no friend of President Trump, there may never be any investigation.
