Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis are not messing around.
The gloves are off and the race for the 2024 presidential campaign is about to get ugly.
And now Donald Trump dropped this compromising video that sent Ron DeSantis into crisis mode.
The pro-Trump super PAC MAGA Inc. dropped a new ad slamming Ron DeSantis for supporting a European-style 23 percent national sales tax.
“In Congress, Ron DeSantis backed a national sales tax, a 23% tax hike on almost everything you buy … from the gas station to the grocery store,” the ad’s narrator states.
This ad is running nationally on Fox News, Newsmax, and CNN as well as in the key early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire.
The national sales tax is one of the more misguided ideas that grew out of some corners of the GOP establishment.
A national sales tax adds a 23 percent tax increase to almost everything Americans purchase.
The DeSantis team pushed back with spokesman Bryan Griffin defending DeSantis supporting a national sales tax by claiming that the national sales tax would eliminate the income tax.
“In Congress, the governor supported the concept of a Fair Tax, a plan to lower the overall tax burden on an individual by replacing all federal taxes — including income tax — with a lower tax,” Griffin told Fox News Digital. “The plan also sought to end the IRS, which, at the time, was being weaponized by the Obama administration. To describe only part of the plan in an attack is dishonest.”
However, this is not true.
The national sales tax does not repeal the 16th Amendment which means the government’s ability to impose an income tax — as well as the taxing authority on payroll and excises taxes — still exists.
On the day the Democrats retake power they will reimpose the income tax and leave the national sales tax in place which would create a supercharged IRS to collect taxes and fund the Democrats’ socialist welfare state.
Prior to Trump slamming DeSantis for supporting a vehicle to allow Democrats to pass the largest tax increase in American history DeSantis hammered Trump over the “culture of losing” that DeSantis claimed Trump created.
DeSantis pointed to the disappointing results of the 2018, 2020, and 2022 elections as evidence that the GOP needed to change direction and go with a new leader for the 2024 contest.
Conservatives can expect more of this back-and-forth now that DeSantis is entering the race.
